What is right is the easiest thing in the world to know, and the most difficult thing to do. Conversely, wrong is the easiest thing to know, and also the easiest | thing to do. Searcely anyone takes notice, without his attention being drawn to it, of the merits of his neighbor; but let the neigh- ber make just one slip and it immediately becomes headline news, Men with afflictions have the pathy of most all who come in contact with them, but the afflicted ones should he as considerate and not force themselvés un- neeessarily on the attention of people. sym- When wages are too high and can- not be lowered, there is no other recourse for the manufacturer but to reduce both the quantity and quality of his goods, and thet makes for unemployment because of the necessary lay-offs. December 25 was finally agreed upon about five centuries after Christ’s ministry on earth and is a date arbitrarily set, like that. of Easter, for the commemoration of an event, rather than as an actual | anni- | versary. St. Chrysostoth speaks of this | date having been first. ‘observed by’ the Christians of the West. : The Christmas Tree, now an almost | use of a palm branch with twelve shoots to signify the completed year, as was the custom of the Egyptians, long before the Christian era. The present significance of the Christmas Tree is by some thought to have originated in Germany. The custom of using decorations of evergreens, particularly mistletoe, has long been observed, especially since the time of the Druids. In the Middle Ages wildly hilarious festivities were held in connection with Christmas, which called forth remonstrances from, authorities of the tendency'to stress the’ festive |) rather than the serious significance of the) Christ mas season. As'now observed, Christmas is firmly estaklished as one of the most universally celebrated festivals of the year. A PESSIMISTIC BROTHER Mr. Virgil Jordan, president of the National Industrial Conference Board, seems a bit pessimistic. He has lost faith in political progres: and says the country is “in thoroughly rotten shape.” Moreover, the breakdown of our present economic system is likely and our political system will also very probably pass out in the next five years, Mr. Jordan, as you might imagine, has faith in “industria! progress.” He is, apparently, one of the old school who thinks that what the country needs is only to put its affairs in the hands of the busi- ness barons who have for years operated the machinery of our national economy. We quite readily admit that the gov- ernment can go too far in its pursuit of business and in its regulation of economic affairs. It may be debatable whether that stage has already been reached. How- ever, the people of the United States do not care to return to the era that produced 1929 and they want some assurance tha repacious greed has been checked. NECESSARY! ‘ Bob Burns, the well-known comedian, recently called attention to the notice printed in a smal] town newspaper, which he avers was penned by his “Uncle Sanky,” a man who was very clever at handling a delicate subject. This was the notice: “There i$ a $mall matter that $ome of our $ub$scriber$ have forgotten. To uf it i$ important. It’$ nece$$ary to our bu$i- ne$$. We are very mode$t and don’t like to $peak about $uch_ thing$. Sincerely your$, $anky;"publi$her.” ‘ Well, that not a bad notice—in any- body’s newspaper. Almost everybody is for friends and_ relatives. Some of these are mere expressions of love and friendship. They are valued and appre- ciated but not absolutely necessary. Here’s a Christmas suggestion. Let everybody seek out one person, man, wo- man, or child who is in need and devote some thought towards making Christmas real for the needy one. A few dollars spent in such cases will bring real holiday planning gifts JUST INCIDENTAL It may be useless to point out that } aviation continues to.make progress.
