Which Did She Want? AN hour later, she was still sit- ting there .. . the duster still in her hand. It began like this: Her sudden, impulsive marriage had been a ghastly mistake. Noth- ing had been changed by it. Rich- and their love for each other, was still there—only now she had Gragged David into the tangle, as well oney and David. He then, too, must have realized the power of this love of theirs that was holding them together ... in spite of other ties, or right or wrong, or—anything. Nina saw her mother in the afternoons and made a sincere effort, to stay away from the 74th St. house in the eve- nings—because she did not want another encounter ‘with Richard that would be: fulb of: meaning looks, and hidden hand clasps, and a furtiveness that got them no- where. In this resolve she was abetted by David, who had no desire to see more of her stepfather than was absolutely necessary. He was fond | of Honey, liked to find her there when he came home, and took a fatherly attitude towards her, and | her fluttery fears for Nina’s hap- piness, that amused all three of them. Her remarks, that first night af- ter her return from the South, had been a key to her subsequent be- havior. “Are you nice, young man? ... Is he good to you, Nina?” ... She had gone right on in that vein, ever since. Richard had not called her, and—aside from missing the sound of his voice—she wanted to get things cleared up between them: iter having revived her with two old-fashioneds, Horseface then proceeded to peat her all over again. “Have you noticed, Nina, that our mother has been behaving nee gf ms moan she didn’t feel wel oTae that attack she called Tppe right after she came back rom the South with me... was that grippe, Nina?” Nina looked her alarm. “Why, Aunt Carrie . .. We should both feel better. Let me know what he says, will you?” But Nina’s talk with the doctor was not wholly reassuring. “Well, I'll tell you, Nina”—he had been their family physician for a great many years—“your moth- er isn’t actually sick . . . but I find Tag pretty exhausted, nervously.” h—you'we seen ber just late- ly?"
