Editor, The Cittzen: I have felt for some time that something should be said about the non-observance of the Lord’s Day in our emmunity. Key West faces the peril of los- ing the Christian Sabbath, Com- mercial interests are. at.’ work breaking down our Sabbath laws. The writer firmly believes that the Sabbath is a basic institution of human society vitally related to the welfare of our people. I believe that the observance of this day will bring great blessings to our city. It meets the fundamental needs of our life. And the higher rea- son for me is, that God requires the observance of the Sabbath Day as a condition of the blessing that belongs to all who obey His| commands. i As a nation we owe a profound debt of obligation to the Chris tian Sabbath. j King James of England by law! directed that the Sabbath Day should be a day of games and) pleasure. The early Pilgrims be-| lieved that a civilization built, around that standard could not! survive and so the¥-came to this continent where they endured un- told hardships that they might maintain the Sabbath Day. I know of course that a favorite sport in some quarters is to heap ridicule and abuse upon them for the sternness of their religion and the severity of their Sabbath laws. But what their critics forget is that in those days, the country} they had left had laws providing! for the punishment by death for the amazing number of two hun- dred and twenty-three offenses. No New England colony had more than fifteen capita! of- fences, so those much abused Pu- ritans were even than far ahead and superior to the people among whom their lives had been spent. | “Honor to whom honor is due,” The infidel, Voltaire, once wrote: “You can only destroy the Christian religion when you first destroy the Christian Sabbath.” The Supreme Court of the Unit- ed States in the famous Trinity) case, in 1892, declared this to be a Christian nation. I regret there is no space to record that ful! de- cision, so important. The Hon. William Strong, Jus- tice of the Supreme Court of our country, said: “The Sabbath has { Thanksgiving Specials Perez ey Market |' TURKEYS Hens and Fryers FRESH KILLED PORK Veal Lamb All Inggredients for Souse SOUP SEASONING 805 Fleming St. Phone 76 | lus in so much stead in our own| Ne day where people might rest, leivil laws ever | | ; GIVES TRICK CIGARS |* BOSTON—Pascal Trent of. this! city was arrested for giving trick! cigars to four policemen. | | Highest Lowest y and which “has been the|Wwotship and economize a little. | Mean __ ation of the world.” | Consider Key West of today.'
