Discussing with several of those who have been consistent objec- | tora to the payment of the price being asked for gasoline The Citi- zen was told that though opera- tors of boats of all kinds have to pay the top price, the tax of six or seven cents is all used for road | Purposes and the boat users de- | rive mo benefit from the roads. This matter has been the sub- ject of long discussions at meet. ings of the spongers and fisher- men, but only reached concrete form recently when it was decided to send a special petition to Gov- ernor Cone, asking that those who gain their living from the sea be announced as exempt from the payment of this special tax on gasoline. One other topic of conversation was heard today when the sea- faring men were meeting at the sponge wharf before the sale this morning, and this was the ap- parent determination of spongers from Tarpon Springs, usually Greeks, to break into the business at Key West. Recently George Curry, former Key Wester, came to the city’ in company with one of the Greek promoters, and discussed the pos- sibility of bringing boats antl divers to operate in these waters, bat as usual they met with no success other than being given good advice. ‘Mr. Curry and his associate ‘were toid in no uncertain words that ‘the men operating on the sponge beds ont of this port, ‘would bitterly oppose any such Movement. They were hookers ‘and did not intend to do any div- ing and would do ali possible to resist the encroachments of these who did collect sponges while in bathing suits.
