MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1937, ROBERTS STARS AND QUALITY FOOD CUBS DEFEAT DODGERS IN TIGHT GAME GIANTS EDGED OUT CARDIN- ALS; TIGERS OVERWHELM- ED YANKS; A’S DOWNED INDIANS TWICE (Special to The Citizen) NEW YORK, Sept. 20.—Chi- cago Cubs took Brooklyn Dodgers into camp by the close score of 2 to 1. The Bruins were outhit, 4 to 7, and also committed one etror. Davis held the Flatbush team to seven safeties. New York Giants edged out St. Louis Cardinals, 4 to 3. Schu- macher and Coffman held the Gashouse Gang to nine bingles. The league-leaders hit three Car- dinal twirlers for 10 safe blows. Again the winning club miscued once. The Giants remain two and a half games in front of the Cubs, having had a game dipped off their lead in Saturday’, con- tests. These clubs wiil meet to- morrow in the opening of a Ge cible” series. ' Boston Bees and Cincinnati Reds split a twin, bill. ,,The Bees took the initial game, 7 to 6, in a slugfest and error-making ‘con-. test. Behind three-hit pit¢hing, by Schoot, the Reds whitewashed the Bees in the nightcap, 2 to 0, with Turner on the mound. Philadelphia Phillies and Pitts- burgh Pirates also divided a double- header. The Phils pounded out an 8 to 1 victory in the first fracas and the Buccos took the final set-to, 5 to 1. Detroit Tigers cut off a game from New York Yankees’ big lead when they defeated them, 5 to 1, with the aid of five-hit twirl- ing by Auker. Once more Bob Feller was sent to the showers. This time Philadelphia Athletics did it when they downed Cleveland Indians, 8 to 4, in the curtain-raiser of a twin bill. The A’s also grabbed the closing game, 5 to 3. Chicago White Sox and Wash- ington Senators won and lost with each other. The Nats edged out the Chisox, 5 to 4, behind a 15-hit attack and five-hit pitching by three moundsmen, in the opening fracas, Kennedy held the Na- tionals to five safeties in the nightcap, as his teammates went on to victory over the Nats, 9 to 1. Called at the end of the third inning because of rain, the twin bill between St. Louis Browns and Boston Red Sox was officially called off without any results be- ing recorded, .
