Nothing Them — Fire-resistant Roof Tops Nursery By Marion Cunningham (EY were personalities of inter- national note on the day they were born. Today, just past three years old, they are the five most famous young-women in the world. They don’t aspire to be queens but they hold forth to a greater, more enthusiastic court than any queen of any realm. If a cat can look at a queen, a crowd can look at a quin and does every bright sunny day that the laughing Misses Dionne frolic in the happy surroundings of the simple, yet most elaborately safe home ever built to shelter any group of youngsters, royal or otherwise. About 450,000 tourists will have visited the Dafoe Nursery this sea- son when autumn’s early chill begins to fall on the Callander, Ont., coun- tryside. Almost three in four of these, it is estimated are from the United States. A representative group of them, seen in the above photograph running pell-‘mell for vantage spots to watch the quis at play, included tourists from all parts of America. But it’s all the same to the quins— Marie, Emilie, Annette, Yvonne and Cecile, Even feminine intuition doesn’t teil the little girls the crowds are there td see them. Wise Dr. Allan Dafoe has caused the ob- s@rvation gallery around the play- ground to be so constructed as to pérmit the spectators to watch and Rear the perfectly natural young- sters at play’ while remaining un- séen and unheard. ‘This precaution is to protect their tiny personalities, that they may grow up as unspoiled; natural, happy youngsters. No less have precau- tons beeh made for their physical Too Good for! At top, representative group of the World Copyright, 1937, NEA Service, Inc. ‘Guins’ huge public makes pell-mell dash for vaiitagé points where, unséen, they watch tiny Dionnes play. Below, the nursery, with sun parlor and play toom, is model of safety and comfort, with asphalt stiingles warding off all danger of roof fire’. safety from fire and accident inthe Dafoe Nursery buildings which have @ value of almost $50,000, with main- tenance and running expenses of about $18,000 annually. Roof fires have long been the bane of rural homes‘far from organ- ized fire fighters as is the hamlet of Corbiel, where live the Dionnes. Especially has that been true in the Ontario country where spark-yield- ing fuel has been almost universally used. The Dionne quins are pro- tected from this fire danger in the nursery shown above by fire-re- sistant asphalt shingles which have @ mineral surface on which no er- rant spark can make trouble. The shingles of a cherry red hue lighten the somewhat drab landscape, blend Pleasingly with the brown log siding and fit admirably into the wise at- tempts of Dr. Dafoe to make life for the quins a safe, colorful, and happy adventure. All three official build- THE WEATHER Temperatures* \to Arkansas, ~90 risen and are Temperatures have; abnormally high| ings of the Dionne group, thé nur- sery, the hospital and thé staff house are roofed with these colorful firé- resistant asphalt shingles. As befits five young women of three years of age whose earnings in the first two years of their lives totalled $500,000, all equipment in the little group of buildings is simi- larly selected for safety, brightness and efficiency. The use of color within the nursery has been the re- sult of study by experts in the child mind, The Board of Guardians set up by the Dominion of Canada has spared no pains to provide for their celebrated wards, Routine in rest, in eating, in teaching of music and French is regular, but not taxing, and is designed for natural, normal growth. And that will be the task of Dr. Dafoe and Canada until the girls are 18 yéars of age. Then they'll start to do their own worrying about the income taxes. | CLASSIFIED COLUMN LEGALS Ge The cotsty, if * ie. dou 3 im or *BLORY a iN O- Tn he Estate of YVONETTE ADAMS, Dectased.
