Even a jaywalker has rights, but. they are usually spelled ‘‘r-i-t-e-s.” 2 Stalin’s idea of preparedness appears | to be to kill off all his best generals, Japan seems to be acquiring China on the installment plan, just like many house- wives do, It requires a statistician to determine whether new magazines are springing up faster than old ones are dying. Every man and woman _ should take time for healthy exercise even if it puts the doctors on a sit-down strike. Half the world wonders how the other half does it, and the other half won-| ders why the other half doesn’t do it. With better times the swindlers dress up old schemes and the public eager to get something for nothing, furnishes the dough, Men in public places receive many -compliments—especially from those who think they might need a favor a little later on. Business pareiy grows of themselves; the owner has to push them along with “advertising, the most effective being the daily newspaper. Saavedra Lamas, Argentine foreign ~ minister, calls the Monroe Doctrine a bar to foreign ideology. Let us hope it is. We want none of the ideology of Mussolini, Hitler and Stalin. President Roosevelt in a proclamation ~=stated that the Constitution is flexible yet “enduring. The Ten Commandments, aré inflexible and enduring. Anything. that, is flexible cannot endure in! its original form; that is self-evident. a! Since business is all but crushed by in- - ordinate taxation, it has no other means cf -relief except passing the burden on_ to -others, and hence we have constantly higher prices. A paternal government may mean well but it cannot dodge cause and effect, and it will always reap what it sows. Gold comes from the earth and the United States is buying it daily and put- ting it back under the earth. Now that it has half of the world’s supply it might be a good idea to buy something with it. The present administration is committed to theory of spending to create prosperity, why should it hoard all its gold? so At the : seventy-ninth hala conven- tion of the American Dental Association, the dentists heard that there was a de- cline in the orgy of extraction or as more | scientifically described as the “fad radical exodontia.” For some time about everything that caused disturbance in othe parts of the system besides the mouth was ascribed to tooth infection, and out came the teeth. ing that if the teeth are extracted, are of no more service to the count. aj of; Perhaps the dentists are realiz- | they | profession, | and must not be yanked out on that ac-} RANGER TO DEFEND CUP After numerous trial races it has been definitely settled that Harold S. Vander- bilt’s new yacht, the Ranger, will defend the America’s cup against the British chal- lenger, T. O. M. Sopwith’s Endeavour II, in } a series of races to be held off Newport, R. L, beginning July 31. The new defender is the most expen- sive boat ever built for these races and ; cost about $400,000, Mr. Vanderbilt beings the sole owner. ‘tempt to lift the cup, his first having | been made in 1934, when his first En-/t | deavour was beaten by the Rainbow, own- | ed by an American syndicate, with Van-| | derbilt as skipper. This year’s event will | be the 17th in the long series of races for | the famous trophy, which was first won by the America in 1851, all having been won by American boats, a list of which follows: | America, Magic, Columbia, leine, Mischief, Puritan, Mayflower, Volun- | | teer, Vigilant, Defender, Columbia | (twice), Reliance, Resolute, Enterprise, and Rainbow. In 1934 Mr. Sopwith made a real bid for the coveted trophy, and won the first two races. The American Rainbow then »took four straight, winning the last race by.aimargin of only 55 seconds. All the races were éxceédingly close, the greatest difference im time being 4 minutes ‘and 1 second;in favor of the Rainbow. One race -wiasprotested ‘by Sopwith on the ground 1 that his boat had been fouled, but his claim was not allowed. The forthcoming races will be follow- ed with great interest by sport lovers on both sides of the Atlantic. DEMOCRACY FACING TEST The question of greatest importance among governments today is whether democratic nations can function in com- petition with the dictator-directed nations. | The outcome of the clash between the democracies and controlled states will be determined in Europe where England and France are on the defensive as Germany and Italy plainly set their courses toward definite objectives, The war in Spain serves as a_ focal point, with Hitler and Mussolini pledged to assist General Franco's rebellion to overthrow the existing government. Peo- ple in the United States who are interested in the continued functioning of demo- cratic processes, need not waste too much } time on what happens here. The truth of | the matter is that if England and France} fall before the forces of fascism, this; “country will have a hard time to exist un- 4 changed in a newly organized world. In} fact, one of the serious repercussions of the Spanish conflict is the effect that strug- gle will have upon Latin America where ; | the United States has assiduously culti- vated the germ of popular self-govern- ment. The situation around Spain is infinite- ly more dangerous today than for some months past. Signs are not lacking that Italy and.Germany contemplate direct ac- | tien, possibl¥ a major military move, | against'‘the Madrid government. If this happens, as wany observers expect, France and England will be brought fact to face with war or acknowledging the practical conquest of Spain by the military r of Germany and Italy.
