It would be hard to pick out any known date that stands out so high above ordinary history, The exact date of the |j, birth of Christ is not known, and of course that stands in a class by itself and is not 1 to be reckoned with any secular event. Within a year Key West will realize What an active Chamber of Commerce can do and has done. And let this be said that when the time comes that it is not criticised, then it should close its doors, for it will not Be worth a coffer's dam, Human nature likes constant change, = may be the reason men who have led emplary lives go wrong occasionally, In polities, party loyalty or the loyalty to one individual “becomes. tiresome and men switch to newer idols or ideals, + Time has proved that both capital and labor must be checked by the government or each will go out of bounds. Then capi- tal and labor, which means the people in general, myst unite to keep the govern- ment from getting out of control. The United States, the wealthiest country in the world, has a merchant marine that is a joke. sh 10 per centum of the goods, age # , i ora in American bo: is deplorable conditi tancerf of the Roo ; stead of Jhumeroug Be Contrary to opinions expressed, reli- gious groups in the United States gained in membership as a whole in 1936, accord- ing to the annual statistical report made} public recently, which is a direct contradic-! lion of these who claim that the churches} have lost ground. The Baptists continue | to lead all other Protestant denominations | With a total of 10,332,005, Catholics remain the largest single denomi-/ nation in the country with a reported membership of 20,831,139. next to that, the date of American in- dependence seems the most significant event of history. It was something more than the mere decision of a nation that it proposed to regulate its own affairs. It was the es- tablishment of a new theory of human so- ciety, destined to revolutionize the world. Previously, the world had been gov- erned by kings, emperors, and aristo- cracies. It had not been supposed that the common people were fit to rule, hence there must be means provided from out- side their number for governing them. The American patriots decided that the time had come for a change in that theory. So they announced the principles; that government must depend upon the consent of the governed, and they built up a great nation on the theory that in an in- telligent country, the people can govern themselves better than anyone else can do it for them. The principle has proven the most revolutionary idea that has entered world politics, and it has spread until most of the great nations are now handled on that basis. It has broadened the opportunities of mankind, has produced more happiness, and the whole world can well celebrate en- thusiastically the date of July Fourth, when this great point of history was passed. THE OTHER SIDE ac- re- Perhaps the greatest bar to the quirement of real knowledge is the | fusal of the average person to look upon “the other side” of a question, particularly one which involves a new idea. We form certain notions regarding people and things, and having done so we seek for arguments to back up those no- tions. We have more concern that we shall vindicate our own ideas than that we shall arrive at the truth about them. Thus we build a Chinese wall about our own intellects and thereby oftener than not shut out the real truth, or at least an important part of it. For this reason every new idea, how- ever beneficient, that arises in the world literally has to fight for its life. It was hard to convince people that the earth is a sphere, that the blood circulates, that vaccination prevents smallpox, that yellow fever is only communicated by mosquitoes. These and innumerable other facts now ac- cepted by all civilized people were bitterly eombatted by the ignorant, superstitious and narrow-minded majority, . It would seem that in the light of world’s advancement in knowledge would be willing to study both sides, ) sides, of every important question, yet few. of them do. ilk THE TIPPING CUSTOM While many attempts have been made to eradicate the practice, even by the passage of laws, the tipping habit persists, through lack of courage on the part of the public, Originally, no doubt, the custom of giving tips to servants was inspired by kindly motives, but it has long since be- come a species of petty graft. Many em- ployers of low-class help pay miserably small wages, with the knowledge that fips | » } from customers will supply the deficiency. Employees accept the small wage with the same understanding. Consequently the public pays in the aggregate vast sums for whieh no service whatever is rendered. The effect of the tipping system is wholly bad, as these who accept the gratuities must lose somewhat in self re- spect, while those who pay them de so sim- ply because it is expected and they do not wish to appear stingy. One restaurant noticed recently dis- lapyed a sign which read: “We pay our while the} waiters living wages and do not permit |pens, them to accept tips.” That sign inevitably | caused patrons to hold a higher opinion of ithe proprietor and his waiters, LEGALS | LEGA Ls NOTICE OF MASTER'S SALE Notice is hereby given that under and by virtue of a’ certain Order and Decree of foreclosure and sale jmade and entered on the 30th day of June, A.
