One of the most encouraging features of the changing situation is the ready re- sponse that is being made to the suggestion that a revived Chamber of Commerce shal} ‘begin to operate. The reception that this suggestion has received has been very nearly one hundred’ per cent favorable. The man who offers his service as secretary is no stranger to the people of Key West. For many years, he has been producing publicity for this section which has found an outlet in some of the nation’s most influential magazines, and many of our newspapers. For the past eighteen mths, Key West has known him timately as the editor of the Key West Oversea Sunday Star and his constructive, considerate attitude is a matter of record. It is characteristic of his methods that he is avoiding the spectacular “high pres- sure” means by which civic organizations are frequently put over; and is relying up- on the common sense and civic loyalty of his neighbors to make a success of the work which is so evidently needed. The Citizen has had every oppor- tunity to appraise the man and his quali- ties as he has gone about his work in this office and by his faithfulness and_ kindly philosophy of life, endeared himself to ali of his associates. With this intimate knowledge of the future secretary of the Key West Cham- ber of Commerce, The Citizen feels justi- fied in endorsing the movement and as- suring the organization of its wholehearted support. We understand that Mr. Stephen Cochran Singleton is holding in abeyance an offer that would take him away from the: people and the place to which he has become sincerely attached pending the practical endorsement, expressed in paid- up memberships, which would make a Chamber of Commerce available to Key West. We have no idea that we will fail to avail ourselves of this opportunity to place a reliable secretary and an organization devoted to the interests of the city and, for that matter, the county, in active service. Based upon the universal and cordial reception with which the proposition is meeting from our representative citizens in all the walks of life in Key West, it is evident that no urging is needed to induce ompletion of the work so well begun. ai “ By the time the bridges offer passage ‘to the waiting throng of visitors and in- vestors nor barred from us by inadequate ‘ansportation facilities we will have a well-organized and smoothly working Chamber of Commerce—a service that is indispensable to cities the country over. Young men who herve been told that there’s nothing new under the sun, are nonetheless convinced, in the spring, that there's something new under the moon. Figures for January reveal that auto deaths on the highways of the nation set a new high record for the month, showing that yeu can kill Americans but you can't slow them down. C. F. Flint, a versatile .and prolific correspondent of The Citizen, who resided in Key West for some time, considers the young women of this city “the most allur- ing home-girls in America.” In this he voices the opinion, often expressed, of many visitors to this island.
