One of the advantages of a “straw vote” is one doesn't have to pay a poll tax. It might be better if European states- men would accept fewer peace plans “in principle” and accept just one in fact. Heywood Broun’s column, unlike the others, is generally red. An Englishman may come along and say it is often yellow. Attorney General Cary D. Unbalanced budgets born of mounting government expenditures and extrava- gancies stand in the background of Spain’s vil strife, financial observers state emphatically. We have some sort of inflation now, but runaway inflation is not an im- mediate menace, though that, too, may come but is still a few years distant. If times again became as good as they were on the average from 1919 to 1929—when the United States ex- perienced the greatest prosperity of _ its history and when taxes: were ““rélling in faster than ever before—it would take 41 years to pay the existing federal debt, statisticians state. . is Every age had outstanding enhergu- mens with the only message to save’ the world, but at the present time there is an oversupply of the gentry. _ Dr. Townsend has a message, Father Coughlin has one, has Upton Sinclair; also Tugwell, Lemke, etc. Nary a one with a message to whats leftover from the masses; the appeal is always to the crowd. Is there no one with a, message to the remnant? Must they always shift for themselves? The cathedral at Seville, Spain, is the largest Gothic church in the world, and supposedly contains the remains of Chris- topher Columbus. Let us hope the belli- gerents will spare ‘that church edifice mainly because it bears the body of the discoverer of America, if not for artistic reasons. Hard-pressed in life. Columbus in death cannot rest in peace. First buried at Seville, his body was removed in 1542 to the Cathedral of Santo Domingo, Haiti. When that island was ceded to the French ir 1795, a transfer was made to the cathedral of Havana, and after Spain’s loss to Cuba, the bones of Columbus were taken back to Seville and placed in the cathedral there. How long they will remain there this time apart. NEW YORK TO KEY WEST—INTRA-|! COASTAL WATERWAY From Trenton, N. J., to Bahia Honda, Florida, the small cruiser, so popular with ; American sportsmen, can travel in land- | locked waters, or with a safe harbor al- ways within easy reach. But the craft that would cruise from the Great Lakes to Key West finds this! justly vaunted “Inside Route” failing it at! two important points. As it starts south it must face the; Shoals to be weathered. | As it approaches the end of the cruise | to perpetual summer seas it must forsake | protected waters at Bahia Honda, and ; complete the journey in the open waters of i the Atlantic Ocean, or the Gulf of Mexico. | To remedy this condition, an active i organization at Point Pleasant, New Jer- | sey, is seeking to have the protected route | continued from Trenton, along the logical ! route, to Point Pleasant, and thus avoid the hazards of the long run to Cape May and the Delaware Bay. Here in Key West, at the southern ex- tremity of the route, we have but to clear away a few mud bars that blockade’ a natural channel through the keys, and the smallest cruiser need not hesitate to cast} off with Key West as its destination. To complete the “Inside Route” from Point Pleasant to Trenton; and from Bahia Honda to Key West, are twin projects es- sential to the development of the immense water-born traffic of yachts and commer- cial vessels, now baffled by the fact that the safety provided stops just short of} reaching a terminal point at each end. Along this protected thoroughfare, there is an almost incredible amount of commercial and recreational traffic. Through one part of the channel with which we are all familiar, namely Jewfish Creek, the thoroughfare between Barnes Sound and Blackwater Sound, it is stated that 4,000 boats pass yearly. Many of these boats are pleasure yachts of the finest type, and only the owners of these boats, or the men handling their accounts, have any idea of the amount of money spent on them while they are in commission. ‘ These private craft are outstanding avenues for the circulation of millions of dollars, expended at the ports into which they put during the season. Their aver- age expenditure is estimated at $20.00 per day. One yacht alone, during a five- months stay in Bay Biscayne is’ credited with haviny disbursed $90,000.00. | It is safe to say that an expenditure } of no more than one hundred to one hun- dred and fifty thousand dollars, would open this end of the route to any yacht that can navigate the channels already open to the north of Bahia Honda, and permit this well-found, affluent argosy to seek new experiences in a cruising area now closed to them; and to re-fit and re- provision here in Key West, with a very considerable advantage to every phase of j business here conducted. We have been centering our attention on the construction of a highway over} which cars may be driven, Somewhat to the neglect of a thoroughfare which would afford access to many boats, each one of which would be likely to mean many times the business which the average car could bring. x Of course, the clearing of the\way in that short stretch between Key West and Bahia Honda, a matter of .only a_ little over thirty miles and most of that already | a natural channel, is what most readily ap- peals to us. By all means let us work for the com- pletion of these short links in the “Inside Route,” that it may become an “Inside Route” in fact well as in name; and let! us encourage a similar activity on the. part} of Northern yachtsmen to the end that yachts seeking for winter cruising in South- ern seas may leave the Atlantic at “Point Pleasant, New Jersey, and come in Jong. procession’ along a safe, protected route, to Key West. . de! Just as it is discouraging ko a father to observe his sons indulge in nonsense that will inevitably lead to disappoint- ment and failure, so it is discouraging to those who possess any historical perspec- tive to observe a great nation plunge into social and economic experiments which, al- though tried many times in the past, have always failed —William Feather; You and Your Nation’s Affairs Constitutional Loyalty By GUS W.
