While there | are™ oc- casions when an honest man is unable to do so, most of the times failure to pay is something else. To what is your failure due? The public knows and if you are cowardly to admit it to yourself, due to is even talking about it, too With the prospective sale of remain- ing Flerida East Coast bridges between Miami and Key West for highway pur- poses, old-timers in Miami recall the days before the Key West extension was built and some of its early engineering plans. The original idea was for the railroad to reach southward from Cape Sable along a route where the keys waters are said to be exceedingly shallow, and where a_ sand and rock grade could-be thrown up at pos- sibly small expense. A storm changed the original ideas of building a railroad along that line after preliminary engineering prints had been completed. It was be- lieved more feasible to traverse the rocky keys further east, where a more substantial roadbed could be built. The possibility of building southward from Cape Sable, how- ever, remains open for re-examination by engineers, but with small possibility of future development. Rumor has it the Sea- board Air Line once considered the project. -—Miami Daily News. NO PLACE FOR SLOPPY THINKING — In a recent address, Charles R. Gay, President of the New York Stock Ex- change, made this very astute comment: i “Most of the criticism of stock exchanges | during a price relapse comes from people ; who speculate with too little knowledge of what they are doing and with ratios of | capital quite out of proportion to their ex- | pansive imaginations and desires. ... “If speculative operations could be so conducted that money was never lost, the | public’s good will toward the stock -ex- ; changes would be one of the really beauti- | ful things of life. Everybody would be} happy all the/time. . . .The tax returns | would disclose an astonishing number of ; million dollar incomes and congress would | be meeting in special sessions trying to re- | duce taxes. ... “The fact happens to be this: Neither speculation nor investment can be made | proof against error, miscalculation and | sloppy thinking. It is thoroughly human | to grow angry and resentful when plans! go awry, especially if the mischance or} miscalculation costs money. But I may state with the support of considerable knowledge that a great section of the pub- lic which makes use of stock exchanges for | speculation and investment is keenly alert for knowledge which will help reduce mis- chance and miscalculation in their market undertakings. More than that, I am con- vinced that the public has made greater strides in grasping the fundamentals of true stock market value analysis than we of the exchanges may realize.” It will be a happy day when everyone realizes that a stock exchange is a market place in which the law of supply and de- mand fixes values, and not an institution | where one may get something for nothing, and turn a hundred dollars into a thousand | without risk or labor. The exchanges don’t pretend to work miracles—they simply perform an essential service to the millions | of citizens who own or wish to buy or sell securities. FOOD PRICES GOING UP Army supply officers, who buy the | vast quantities of food consumed both by the Army and the Civilian Conservation Corps, expect America’s food prices to be more than 20 per cent higher by next spring than they are although a} marked increase has already occurred in ! recent weeks, The high ranking officers who make this prediction are obliged to keep inform-! ed as accurately as possible concerning probable future food costs, and their esti- mate accords with informed opinion on the subject in other quarters. The increased food prices which are inevitable will affect every family in the} land, including those on farms who havej to go into the market for any portion of their food supplies. Because of the drouth and the gov- ernment’s policy of restricting farm pro-| duction, it is certain that great quantities of food must be imported from other coun- tries, thus aiding the farmers of those countries at the expense of American agri- } culture. During 1935, farm products which } might have been produced on 15 million acres of American land were imported, and it seems likely that the coming year see an even greater volume of im- The government’s program of plan- rcity is increasing the living costs of every citizen, besides increasing unem- ployment among tenant farmers, share croppers and farm laborers. now, ODDS FAVOR ROOSEVELT Republican generals are optimistic in public—but insiders say that all isn’t cheer | and laughter when they meet in private. The party has just emerged from the leanest three ye. in its history. Its local organizations are in almost incredibly bad shape in many states, and they can’t be built up to the desired level in the few; months remaining before November. And the Democratic machine never functioned more smoothly and efficiently than it is now functioning. On top of that, recent polls—such as the Institute of Public Opinion’s—show that Landon sentiment—which reached its peak at convention time—is weakening, that Roosevelt is leading and is tending to slowly increase his lead.
