Question—What form of gov- ernment does Key West have? Answer—Well, now, we used to have a county seat and a city hall. Things got bad, and Gov-j ernor Sholtz and Mr. Stone came down and after some e¢onversa-; tions, our ruling bodies os to turn it all over to the governor and Mr. Stone. Things went well until Mr. Stone moved to Wash- ington and then things bogged along from bad to worse until it got to where it is now with a lot of imported men and women run- ning the show from a building in the Navy Yard. It seems no one in Key West had enough brains to know what we needed. Question—Why have you peo- ple allowed six months to elapse without repairing your road dam- age? Answer—Don’t blame us Key West folks. About eight years ago a storm washed out about as much of the’road between Miami and Key Largo as the last Sep- tember storm did. Our County Commissioners and the State Road Department got it open again in about two months, but that was anti-alphabet days. Nowadays the boys split the work up into enough responsibilities that there will be somewhere to pass the buck. For stance, we find one man doing work at Matecumbe and at No: Name; then the State Road De- partment (which is a good organ- ization and knows where it is going) is doing some work on the Key Vaca stretch; and the WPA supposed to be getting the fer- ready. Anyhow, the hardest job done so far, I am told is get- ting the office foree going on the Matecumbe job. You know it takes time to get an office force going, and maybe in another six months that crowd up there who won’t employ Key West men, will finally get an office force, and then just watch the dirt fly, you betcha. Why did you have to send the new ferry, the “Pilgrim,” to No: Name to have her measured for the ferry slip? Answer—Now, that’s a hard one. I guess they were short of carpenters or engineers, or maybe it was easier to send her to No Name than it was for the man to come down here from No Name to measure her; or maybe some- body just wanted a ride. You know, time hangs heavy; I think maybe the boys figure they have been going too fast on this job already and will get through too quickly. Question—Why won’t this man at Matecumbe employ Key West labor? Answer—Maybe the don’t like them and maybé he don’t want people in Key West to know how fast he is doing the job, and may- be he is afraid Key West labor would finish the job too quickly and he would be out of a job be- fore his office force allotment is gone. Anyhow, I don’t know much about him except folks say he hasn’t done so well on what work he has been given to do. Space will not allow more an- swers today. I will try to an- swer some more every-day ques- tions in a later issue of your pa- per. ‘ EDDIE STRUNK. Key West, Fla., Feb. 14, 1936. Captain H. S.
