What about that doctrine so much i: vogue just a few years ago that govern- ment is the servant rather than the lord of ~the people? Well, boys and girls, th. first month of 1936 is at an end and the question to ask ourselves is what have we done to those well-intentioned resolutions. One of the gubernatorial candidates beckoned some of the bystanders to come on in “the water's fine,” and at once the | while crowd plunged in and are now floundering arouy'! awaiting the call. It} is going to be difficult to pick a winner. C. B. Treadway has been re-elected chairman of the state road department, and his election will put a quietus on the surmises that he woyJd leave the depart- ment to become a pica for: governor. Mr. Treadway has iany friendis ‘in Key West and he would have polled a big vote. Candidate Hodges tellsie ‘ithe gover- norship, is definitely * M6’ be a con- firmed opponent of a =i tax, but in his platform he advocates the adoption of the - Townsend plan, which is absolutely based on a 2 per cent sales tax. It is impossible, even in politics, to ride a horse two ways at the same time. Nepotism is becoming so rampant there ought to be a law against the prac- tice of this bestowing of patronage by rea- son of relationship rather than merit. A United States senator has a bill in prepara- tion to make it unlawful for a government employe to hire one of his own kin, but it will never become law, for too many poli- ticians would be affected adversely by the enactment, ard who is the politician who does not look out for his first? own interests Radio advertising will become so un- popular some day that it will be dis- . continued as it has been in some countries. ! After hearing your presentation, I agree with you. The court will therefore appoint in your place, railroad men who can make it pay.” This would cause a thrill of life throughout a community that has shown itself possessed of courage and tenacity to a marvelous degree. With less effort than has been shown by many railroads that have successfully colonized the territory through which they ran, an enterprising. management could make of the string of keys through which ue extension passes a hive of activity dur- ing the tourist season, and could encourage cae development of year ’round settle. ment. Like water piling up against a dam, a flood of seekers for climate and re-creation in its finest sense, mill around in Miami, barred from the finest winter climate and the most peaceful and restorative environ- ment that the nation has within its bor- ders. We are emerging from a_ paralyzing depression, not only to the north of us, but to the south as well; and the argu- ment is presented that because a_ vessel can not cross the bar at a time of unprece- dented low tide, she shall therefore be put out of commission when, as surely as the forces of nature operate, the tide will rise and commerce again flow in a_ golden stream between Key West and Cuba. More than that, the abandonment of the railroad will forever end our hopes of becoming a Free Port and seeing ships of all nations ride at anchor in our incom- parable harbor, or moored to commodious wharves. For the United States to abandon any of its out-lying possessions : would be a proposition that would meet with active resistance. For it to permit an ancient and honorable city lying within its borders to be scuttled, is unthinkable. We trust that the court in its wisdom will not permit this to take place. There is only one Key West, your Honor. Glorify the purpose, the vision and the memory of Henry M. Flagler and restore again and make available to the rest of the nation one of its choicest pos- sessions, CHAIN STORES MAY SELL OUT. The president of one large chain of* stores says the threat of taxes against. chains suggests that it might be feasible for the company to turn wholesaler and} sell out its units to store managers in states where anti-chain taxes have been| enacted. Such a course, it is contended by trade experts, would threaten wholesalers. This, however, would be in line with the desires of chain executives who blame wholesalers for most of the anti-chain- propaganda. Politicians who advocate the Town-, send plan either are ignorant or they: stultify themselves. In either case they’ are not qualified to represent their con- stituents. | School Buildings Furniture Apparatus Libraries LIABILITIES. as Warrants Warrants Notes + Outstanding General School Fund Outstanding Teachers Salary Fund Outstanding General School Fund Bonds Outstanding Special Tax Bonded Districts Station Abilene .
