That is a_ civic’ and political virtue which is conspicuous by its absence here, and we could do with some of it. Last Tuesday there was a_ little more evidence of it in Lee county than there usually is but 50 per cent patriotism isn’t enough. Until we do far better than that there isn’t a chance to buck Key West and we might as well forget about electing a state senator. : There isn’t much hope that. we shall improve our harmony all of a sudden, We have a local habit of clipping the wings of those who get to flying too high. When we get a good mayor, a good member of the legislature or any other public official who distinguishes himself outside of the rou- tine, we proceed to knock him off with great enthusiasm. That may be excused as characteristic of human nature but we shall never get anywhere in larger politica! affairs if we continue te suppress every man we produce who shaws promise of knowing his way around. If this is disputed examples can be cited. We once had in the legislature a representative named Watt Lawler who had extraordinary talent for that service. His qualifications were so eminent that in one session he put himself in line for speaker of the house. As soon as we learned of that prominence we snuffed him out and he has been kept suppressed ever since, : : Not long ago we had the good fortune to get a mayor by the name of Josiah Fitch who had the training to make us as good &@ mayor as any town ever had. When we found out for sure how able he was we promptly kicked him out. Bringing the list of examples. up to date there is Jim Franklin. He has all the . qualifications for state senator that anyone Some employees might work faster if they were not too modest to show. off. a A good many new gouaduates will soon that alma mater failed to teach them how to get'a job. . _ Now we are heading. for the last round up and then we will have political aniet for a little while anyway. : A New York was found living in a sewer. Probably a acurriloua newspaper could specify. Conceding every claim that could be made for his Key West opponents there was no good enough reason why all of Lee county shouldn't have voted for him. Yet fewer than half of us did. There are now. two or three young fel- lows coming up in Foyt Myers and Lee county politics. They have what it takes te become stars in the public service. But they had better not let too many people find out about it. As soon as the news gets around they will be cut down to common political size. ‘ Down in Key West they don’t do busi- ness that way. They fuss among them- selves, all right,-but when they have a chance to use one of their number to gain advantage for their county they get to- gether at a moment’s notice and do it by hook or crook. If their method succeeds while ours fails we haven’t much kick com- ing. All we have to do is to adopt their winning ways. But we probably won't. There are too many people who. couldn’t bear to see a neighbor achieve so much prominence as to become speaker of the house or state senator; or to become so ‘strong in his own county that he might as- pire to run for congress or some high state In Key West belore the waa a big banner, “Vote for Park Tram- mell, the friend of Key West.” The vote was Trammell 423, Pepper 1,204, and whatever you may say about them down there they know who their friends are.— Fort Myers News-Press, _ Beteherlife, + Bicycle riding is coming into vogue again, either through necessity or design. It’s like A FAMOUS RIDE As a change from the almost mo- notonous present day accounts of record- breaking airplane flights, the story of an old-time exploit on horseback is refreshing by way of contrast. Such a story was re- cently told in the New York Herald-Tri- bune, and deals with the famaus ride of Felix Pavier Aubrey who covered the 800 miles between Santa Fe and Independence in less than six days. This happened in September, 1848, when settlements in the Southwest‘ were few and far between. Aubrey had al- ready made the trip in eight days, and bet $1,000 that he could make it in six. With relay horses stationed along the route, he started alone. At one relay point he found no mount, but its keeper killed and scalped by Indians, so with hia famished horse he pressed oy, Toward the end of another leg of the trip his horse gave out and he trudged 20 miles on foot | to the next stop. With little to eat and only two hours’ the saddle, he finally reached Independ- dead than alive. Upon arrival Aubrey had to be lifted from the saddle, whith was eaked with blood.
