Boarding house keepers will say amen to LAW REFORM NEEDED Taken man to man, it is probable that the lawyers of the country illustrate as high ; a type of citizenship as can be found in the ranks of any other profession or calling. It is not, therefore, the purpose of this article to cast any reflections upon lawyers, col- lectively or individually, so far as their in- tegrity is concerned. It is nevertheless true that lawyers are in the main to blame for the multiplicity of laws with which this country is burdened today, as well as for the dilatory tactics ex- hibited by our courts of high and low de- gree. Some time ago the Illinois Bar Asso- | ciation declared that “the subject of law reform is technical and the lawyers must deal with it, yet they do nothing, or are hopelessly divided.” No less an authority than the late Chief Justice Taft condemn- | ed our present system of criminal proce- dure. A similar expression was made in a resolution of the American Bar Associa- tion. Congress and state dominated by lawyers; all laws are framed by lawyers, (many of them to be later de- clared unconstitutional by other lawyers acting in the capacity of judges) ; all court procedure is established by lawyers—yet the highest authorities among them admit that they have made a sorry mess of it all. An exchange says that General John- son has a bear by the tail and can’t let loose. We cannot see how he can hold on much longer, bears have such small ; tails, It is almost unbelievable but there are statistics to prove that in 1933 one_per- son out of each 15 of the nearly 130,000,- 000 people in this country were seriously | hurtin accidents. Maybe there hasn’t been any shakedown, but there’s been lots of talk. Administrator Julius Stone is trans- forming the whole CWA structure. He is said to be moving the “skeleton” of the or- ganization to Jacksonville. No doubt some skeletons will be left behind. The move to Jacksonville will be more convenient for the people of Central and South Florida than Tallahassee. But Orlando would have been far more conven- ient for all Florida. Nor need Mr. Stone console himself | in the belief that he is moving into a Tess | political atmosphere. He will find as many | political wire pullers and chiselers in Jack- sonville as at Tallahassee and for the same school. “Watch, look and listen’ will be a good motto for Mr. Stone to follow if he has a sineere desire to serve worthy and } needy people in Florida. Any- one who is not owing us and will not do so, is requested to move to North Dakota and | make room for someone who will.” One would think that everybody would be in favor of the Child Labor but there are differences of | opinion, and many reasons for them. Several prominent men have been out- spoken in their opposition parent has expressed himself as most bit- terly opposed. The most recent dec- laration against the Child Labor Amend- ment was made by one-time Senator James A. Reed of Missoeri, whe said in his speech: “To my mind this un-American thing ought to be killed by and every legis- lative body.” 4 clerk, | many a} cha Be Sai wi sygeeag gees eos ye | YZ ri [| ZZ aa | il i i | Highest Lowest Mean Normal Mean ...
