BLAKESLEE (Associated Press Science Editor) CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Dec. 6.—A man can explode with ja 5,000,000-volt human lightning flash—if he is careless—in working Massa- chusetts Tech’s new atom- smashing gun. This risk of human explosion is unique, the first time man has faced this particular hazard. The atom-smashing charge, 10,- is accumulated on es of two polish- ed, hollow aluminum _ spheres mounted high above the ground. Each sphere stores continuously a 5,000,000-volt charge, or half the total. It’s Safe Inside The only “safe” place while these two giants are firing charges at each other is.inside the spheres. That, curiously enough, is ab- solutely safe, except for the re- mote hazard that some scientist | inside. will get absent-minded and go wandering out through the laboratory manhole. The electricity forming the 10,- 000,000-yolt. current is stored ex- jclusively on the outside of the spheres. But the men_ working inside are under an electrical ten- sion equal to the voltage outside their own sphere. Their bodies are charged with 5,000,000 volts. They do not even feel this charge. It is harmless because it has no place to go. Don’t Stick Out A Finger! The atom-smashers are in an electrical tension world as safe as the earth, but one.‘so small— 15 feet in diameter—that only about one, second is-needed to get out of it. “If,they so much as stick out one finger it would give off a 5,000,000-volt flash. If they fell out, their bodies would strike the ground with flashes roaring like big guns. For two reasons the chances of Scientists Can’t Feel Their 5,000, num spheres supported on tall insulat “lightning flash.” INFORMATION Is GIVEN REARDING this accident are. remote. The workers are securely housed in before the current is turned on. After the current: is shut off it] takes only a few seconds for the| 5,000,000, volts in the body toj leap away into the air. After this leakage there is no danger. Voltage Generated Quickly The record-breaking electric; charges are built up inexpensively from small generators which spray electricity upon endless paper belts a yard wide, running over ‘a pulley up into the spheres. The belts speed a mile a minute. A fine wire at their upper ends draws the electrical charge off the belt. It takes only a few seconds to build each sphere up | to 5,000,000 volts, One is nega- tive, the other positive, so that the voltage between them is 10,- 000,000. This gives a continuous flow of} 10 times the power of any direct jcurrent ever before generated.
