Hence; SMEARING OF SAME OFTEN INTERFERES WITH APPRE- HENDING CRIMINALS IT Is STATED Possible apprehension of crimi- nals has been frustrated on num- erous occasions by the thoughtless obliteration of finger prints by those who have suffered from their depredations. This is done _by handling articles that have evi- dently been in the hands of the perpetrators of the crime. An attempt was made to bur- glarize the home of Juan Lopez, 910 United street, last evening. The burglar used a small “jimmie” to force open the door. He be- came frightened and ran, leaving the instrument behind. Reporting the theft to the sher- iff’s office, Mr. Lopéz also hand- ed the sheriff the “jimmie”. How- ever, he said that it had been handled by several persons and the finger prints naturally were smeared and rendered unfit for photographing. The sheriff and his force want to impress on the thoughts of people who have suffered from robbers, the necessity of allowing éverything that shows having been handled by robbers to remain un- touched until photographs have been taken of the finger prints. With the development of the persons may be found, as there are hundreds of prints in the sheriff's office that have been tak- en during the past two years.
