BRIDGE™:DRIVE INTENSIFIED So far as regards the promoters of the bridge project, their sky of confidence is ; still without a single cloud. | They have arranged to make an in- tensive drive during the next four or five weeks to get money to construct the bridg- es, and, with that object in view, they will have from four to six contact men in Wash- ington and from two to four in Tallahassee to keep alive, day in and day out, the bridge proposition till the cumulative ef- forts, the promoters feel confident, result in success. The probability that C. B. Treadway, | chairman of the State Road Department, will be appointed state administrator of | public works by President Roosevelt is an- | This was a me other factor that has enheartened mem- bers of the Bridge Commission, as it is known that Governor Sholtz, one of those who have endorsed Mr. Treadway for the position, has favored for many years the proposed long bridges. Indeed, Governor Sholtz had a plan of his own that, he assured friends in Key | West, he would have advocated when he became governor had not the ‘movement started, six months before he was inducted into office, to try to obtain a loan from the R. F. C. At present Governor Sholtz’s interest in the bridge proposition is far more intense than it was before the move- ment became as concrete as it is now, so that Key Westers may feel assured that, with Chairman Treadway, the governor’s loyal supporter, assuming the office of state administrator, they will have in him aman who realizes that great benefits will accrue not only to Monroe and Dade counties but’ to the state at large by. the construction of bridges between No Name Key and Lower Matecumbe. Every since he has been in 'Washing- ton as representative of this congressional district, J. Mark Wilcox has been active in assisting the bridge advocates. And, according to information received by The Citizen, he is going to continue that activi- ty. He returned to his home in West Palm Beach for the Fourth of July holiday, but will go back to Washington to join the for- ces that are working before the Public Works Board to get its approval. of. the ap- plication for money to build the bridges. Indications at present are that Key Westers will know in the next four or five weeks whether or not the federal govern- ment will finance the construction of the bridges, because, while the contact men there are doing their work, the Bridge Commission will attend to the details, re- quired by their action, at a meeting to be held in Key West at an early date. THE UN-PEGGED YEN The French delegation at the London economic conference threaten to walk out because the United States will not agree to.“peg the dollar.” They would have us name a point below which the dollar shall not drop in value—a value expressed in terms of franes. Since France is still on the gold standard our pegging the dollar would thus put us back on the gold stan- dard. The British are eager for stabili- zation, but are keen enough to see why the United States could not give up one inter- national weapon now in the hands of Pres- ident Roosevelt. Assuming the United States could ob- tain at the hands of the British and the French satisfactory agreements to reduce tariffs and other trade restrictions in re- turn for dollar - stabilization, there still re- mains Japan with an inflated yen. And Japan happens to have been one of the chief offenders in flooding American mar- kets with cheap goods before we offset the depreciated yen with our depreciated dollar. Japan could further reduce her yen after the dollar, the pound, and frane had been pegged, and would hold the trade advantage of the world. Monetary stabilization is futile unless yen is also stabilized. Mere promise on the part of Japan to peg her currency at any given point would be only another | Japanese promise. That brings the international currency | problem squarely against an impregnable wall.
