Hope was alifiost extinct in the hearts of the American peo- ple. Just ahead of them the clouds of disaster appeared on the horizon. A]l was darkness and gloom. There was starving in the midst of plenty. * The people could see no hope ahead. A change of administration of the govern- ment was imminent, but what could be ex- pected of the government when it ‘ had doné its best and brought forth nothing but failure. Panic was in the air. Theré séemed nothing that could be doe to retiedy what appeared to be an impos+ sible situation. Then came the inauguration of a new president, the beginning of a new ad- ministration. Almost as a part of the in- augural ceremonies came the news of the collapse of ou¥ banking system. Nothing but a miracle, miracles, could save the situation. But the miracles developed. Once again a leader appéared when the need of his appeararice was paramount. Just as in past critical stages of our history, wher leaders appeared as if by magic, so did the yequired Jeadérs appear in our time ‘of greatest need, , In four short weeks the country has seen the road to better thitigs cleared by. efficiency in governmental circles. The threatened banking panic, which would have planged the country into misery un- speakable, died in its tracks, destroyed by vigorous action: A law sixteen years old, whieh had been available to his predecessor, was re- surrected by President Roosevelt and used to provide a method of cure. The banking holiday was ordered—the neédeéd lull in the panic created. With time to think, a series of THE KEY WEST CITIZEN AGHOSS 1 Precious stones Frequent breakfast food Away 12, Russian sea 13. The daughter of one of the most distinguished of them all-is now proving that the talent that makes a good editor is sometimes passed on to the next generation. Years ago, a young man started a newspaper in Atchison, Kansas. He éalled it “The Atchison Globe” atid made if one of the best-known newspapers in the country. After working hours he wrote a nével which he called “The Story of a Country Town” atid that too, in time be- caime aii Anierican classic. The heroine of the novel is naiméd Mateel, and when a daughter was born to the author, she was given that name. The editor and autha is Ed. W. Howe, “The Sage of Potato Hill.” Ed. W. Howe’s fame as an author rests up- on the single novel, but the daughter Mateel Howe Farnham, has just completed her fourth, “Lost Laugliter,” to bé pub- lished by Dodd, Mead and Company. Mrs, Farnham cannot remember when she bégan to write. It seemed inevitable as @ mentber of the Howe’ faniily. Her mother and two brothers asstmed that she would write stories. Her father wanted het to be av outstanding newspaper wo- mah, a feminine Ed. Howe.
