TUESDAY, JANUARY 81, 1933, Ceovccccoccccs coco ° $OOOOCOHCOODSCOOOSOOOCOOESESSOSDCHOOHEROOCOOOOOO RL SYNOPSIS: Farrell Armitage. fells Mark Lodely that he has launched Mark’s career as artist meness Barbara Quentin, Mark’s flancée. mance such an agreement, but Mark orders her to “shut. up.” Chapter 44 “COMIC OPERA PIFFLE” Fe all very well for Mark to tell me to shut up!” thrust in Mre. Lodely. “But I don’t see why I shouldn’t say I never heard any- thin’ so fantastic in all my life. And you can’t deny that: warned you, Farrell, didn’t [? I said Babs has never had a thought apart from Mark, I said. But I daresay you're one of the stubborn sort, you'd rather take a tose at a hedge than go round by ¢ gate—” “One moment, Mrs, Lodely. Mark wants to say something.” “It's hardly worth my saying. But do you happen to know, Arm- itage, that on the very day of my operation Barbara was begging me, to be thoroughly ungallant, badgering me into marrying her in a few days’ time?” “I know that.” Armitage was de- termined to keep cool, “She theught that 1 wasn't: keeping my jately level,” contributed Mark and shook jwith genuine mirth. “But now our compact is re- green, deep pool, winking in the light of the fire, “Unfortunately, I'm not in a condition to hawk it for sale. You don’t happen to col- lect emeralds, Armitage?” “1 don’t, but I'll buy this one.” “Poor old Armitage!” crooned Mark. “You daren’t prevent my being able to afford Barbara a ring.” “Of course I daren’t! Any more than you dare prevent my send- ing her flowers and books—” “The devil you do!” “You and I,” continued Armitage cheerfully writing ‘Mark Lodely, Esq,’ on the blank check.—“you and are now, as a result of my machi- nations, rivals of equal distinction for a lady’s hand. I shall hang about her unashamedly for the agreed time. If she still won’t have me, I shall clear out of the country.” “And try and steal a girl from some other poor devil of a erip- ple!” Mark’s sudden rage was upon him, “You know you've pretended to be so cursedly open and un- ashamed and all that, but you've played a low-down game and you know it. God, if I had strength, Td give you the damnedest hid-| ing!” : “You may have that strength yet. When you have, remember that it alsé “that it was through your behavior ahd not mine that she broke off her engage-' ment to you.” “Comic-opera piffle! She does that kind of thing. Makes me sick, looking coy and pulling at a daisy, he loves me—he loves me not! ny But ['ve always told her 1 won't jendare it and 1 won't endure it now!” His voice rose wildly. “Though I suppose that, while I'm! on my back here, you'll feel free! to cook up any lies againet mo that you think she’ll swallow, What! is she doing? Where is she? [_ haven't even an address to write) to. You're deliberately keeping: her away from me!” “Hardly! she has wound up her affairs. She is at Miss Raoul’s house in St, John's Wood, busy redecorating it. How much did you say you wanted for the emerald?” ‘ hundred and fifty,” mut- ted, | t Mark sulkily; and as Arm- more like other engaged girls then.” There was another long silence. “That's really rather a good idea,” commented Mark at last. jAgain he poked at the stone, a itage calmly inscribed the amount in words and in figures Mrs. Lode- ly, who had opened her mouth, @hut it” again. the tips “of her ears glowed The check changed’ hands and Armitage slipped the emerald back into his pocket; and at once Mrs. Lodely be- gan to talk at the top of her voice, possibly to drown the sound of the transaction. “It's absurd even to think of Barbara seriously breakin’ with Mark,” she announced. “Why, they're been devoted to each other since they were children! Mark's father made Babs promise—" “You and I, Mrs, Lodely, are the last people in the world to prophesy Barbara's actions. I'm anxious to believe the engagement broken because I want to marry her myself. You're anxious to think {it stl existe because—” Armitage paused, then added de- liberately, “because you think mar tiage with Barbara wonld be finan- cially advantageous to your son.” (Copyright, 1922. "STRAND THEATER The gaiety that dominated pre- war Vienna has been the inspira- tion for many a stage and screen musicale, but the more hectic gaiety of the capitol in post-war days is employed as a theme for the first time in “Evenings for Sale,” film based on an original story by L. A. R. Wylie, and with musie by Johann Strauss the Younger, nephew of the “waltz king,” which shows tonight at the Strand Theater. Herbert Marshall (the phe- nomenal star of “Trouble in Paradise”), Sari Mari Charlie Ruggles and Mary Boland, all re- cent recruits to the movies from the American and European stage, play the leading roles in the pic- ture. In words and music, ‘Eve- nings for Sale” tells the story of the love of a Count made pen- niless by the war, and a girl from a middle-class family which has acquired suddent wealth. As in Maurice Chevalier’s “Love Me To- night” and the popular “This Is the Night,” the camera surveys their romance from tricky angles, and music in frequent tense mo- ments replaces their words, Marshall, Broadway and Lon- don stage orite, who played op- posite Marlene Dietrich in “Blonde Venus,” and with Miriam Hopkins and Kay Francis in Ernst Lubitsch’s “Trouble in Paradise,” is cast as the nobleman. with me, "bo, We'll start on a trip into Old Mex- ico.” “You're on!” agrees Puffy. “T've seen it, by golly, But I'll see it again for a fat hot tamale.” THE KEY WEST CITIZEN “FLORIDA YOUTH" ~One of the outstanding art exhibits to be found in the Florida building at the Century of Progress exposition at Chicago, this year, “will be a statue of a young girl typifying Florida youth, the work of Cary E.
