Married men may have better halves, but bachelors generally iave better quar- ters. : Anyway unemployment is being re- lieved iby employing experts to compile statisties about unemployment, Here’s great news. Congress has ex- empted from admission tax, tickets for the inaugural ceremonies on March 4. te —— pd TH boosting of every hero ig usually followed by,a campaign of humanizing, or what in common parlance is known as de- bunking. The New York Times reports that at least 500,000 Americans are now using “wooden money,” which reminds »'d timers of the farewell injunction to those leaving for distant places, “Don’t do anything I wouldn't do, and don’t take any wooden money.”” It looks like anything and every- thing comes to pass in these new days. The merchants of Fort Pierce are op- posed to the issuance of scrip with which to pay 50_per eentum of the city em- ployees’ salaries. They assert that the serip issue if put into practice virtually amounts to a 2 per centum sales tax, hut woute-eonsider the proposal after the city had reduced its expenditures to the min. imum. ‘ a Anything that concerns the loan from R. F. C. for the construction of the pro- posed bridges across the water gaps be- tween Key West and the mainland is of paramount interest to the people of this community. With this in mind The Citizen is today reprinting an editorial from the Ocean County Leader, of Point Pleasant, N. J., written by Ivey E. Peebles ,who spent some time here prior to. entering the news- paper field in the New Jersey coast resort. Mr. Peebles is editor and manager, besides having a financial interest, in this splendid publication, Sede shee ee A DESERVING PROJECT | (Ocean County Leader, Point Pleasant, | N. J.) t A proposed construction. project of | deep significance to this section is now! pending, contingent upon a loan from the | Reconstruction Finance Corporation at Washington. The project is that of the Overseas Bridge Corporation of Miami, ! Florida, to construct two bridges in Mon- roe county, Florida, on U. 8. Highway No. 1 to enable automobile traffic to reach Key | West without the necessity of using ferries | hetween No Name Key and Grassy Key | and between Grassy Key and Lower Mate- cumbe Key. Except for the lack of these two bridges the paved highway, U. S. No. 1, now extends to Key West parallel with the tracks of the Florida East Coast Rail- way. The highway has several long bridges in its stretch” ‘ready but ferries are used at the two gaps where the water. is deepest, although the railroad has span- ned these gaps with their bridges of archviaduct construction. The Overseas Bridge Corporation is requesting the loan on the basis of bridges being self-finanging from tolls. This writer personally knows that many automobiles every year attempt to make the 165-mile drive south from Mi- ami to Key West only to tuen back when they reach the ferry gap and find the ferry- boat filled to capacity and that there will not be another for six or twelve hours. The trip is one vf matchless scenic beauty and Key West with its half Spanish population and its subtropical fruits and. flowers is charmingly different from any other Florida city. Hundreds of thousands who go as far south as Miami wish to extend their trip to Havana. Naturally most of them want to approach Havana as nearly as possible in their automobiles. The gain of 165 miles | from Miami to Key West is considerable and leaves only 90 miles to make by. boat to Havana. There is no doubt the bridges would pay for themselves in a few years. The Pan-Amefican highway from New England to South America is being con- structed along two separate routes: The one west to St. Louis and south through Texas, Old Mexico, and Central America; the other drops directly south along the Atlantic seaboard through Florida to Ha- vana, thence to the Yucatan Peninsula and south through Central America. The East will find this latter route several days shorter despite the necessity for short steamboat ferry trips fram Key West to Hayana and from the west end of Cuba to Yucatan. The importance of improving our means of communication with South Amer- ica has been the practical theme which has occupied the talent of Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh. The an-American Airway line has its most southern U. S. station at Key West, Florida. The next stop is Ha- yvana. The planes make the circuit of all important South American capitals. James S. Carson writing on, “Latin America Today” in the Industrial Néws Review for January says: j “Latin America is the world’s greatest storehouse of -raw- -material—-and when raw material prices crashed, the purchas- ing power of the southern countries naturally crashed wich them. But Latin America is on the way back, and _ inter- American relations and trade loom larger ; in importance than ever before.” Longitudinally Point Pleasant, New Jersey, is west of South America: It is absurd for people of this section to have to drive west and dawn throagh Old Mex- ico to reach South America which actually lies east of us. The route south through Florida is the direct route for ali this east- ern section where most of the people of the United States live. If every citizen east of the Mississippi | river exerted himself to bring the project | to the favorable attention of the R. F. C.| he would be acting in behalf of his own most enlightened self-interest. The bridges | should be built now while the costs of | material and jabor are at a low point and | when public construction projects are so_ much needed to relieve unemployment. | : The good old pirates of two and three | centuries ago were, like modern brigands | and similar folk, of a pious and extremely | punctilious disposition in the observance of the more superstitious practices of religion. | Even in church upon occasion they would i shoot anybody considered to be lacking in | a proper respect for the God they wor-| shiped.
