Despite the depression, the United States mint at Denver made more money “Sn 1932 than it has since 1928. That’s an + encouraging financial statement. Now the ; trick is to get some of it. ~ . Tr an Associated Press dispatch printed in The Citizen Wednesday, a geologist says that Key West is not sink- ‘ing. Key Westers would rather have a financier make that statement. + The Cuban national labor congress «will have presented before it on January “16, a resolution urging the sale or rental of Cuba's new $20,000,000. capitol build- ving. As an economie gesture, that’s good vone. j 4 Where the merchants do not adver- tise extensively in their local paper, mail ‘order houses flood the community with “their literature, because in such localities “their advertising matter sent through the au is most effective. Here comes the Avperican Association for the Advancement of Science and says - that Key West is neither rising nor falling. » Just standing still, but it is another scien- Aific fact that nothing stands still and every- thing goes either backward or forward. : Beientists say there is an enormous “traveling bump” which continually makes | “a circuit of the earth and causes a differ- ence of, at times, 12 miles between two points. Just think how much. the railroads oa lost by not being cognizant of this * fact. . Get this. The leading nations en- “gaged in the world war—Great Britain, France, Germany and Italy, together with Canada,—COMBINED will spend 10 per cent less for the so-called “veterans” than the government at Washington, and_ still _they are not satisfied. i STRONG CABINET NECESSARY A strong cabinet is an absolute neces- sity if the new administracion is to fune-! titn at its greatest point of efficiency. The congress will be both independent { and inexperienced. is good trait in any rience is a real danger. Independence congress, but inexpe- congress that is independent will be diffi- } cult to handle. The democratic leadership in the house of representatives is none too strong. | In the senate things are'a bit better. There | are many democratic senators who are men of great ability and . legislative acumen. Senator Wagner of New York is these. He will probably be the administra- tion spokesman in the senate. In addition there are. other democratic senators of political wisdom and legislative experience. The lower branch of congress will furnish the rea] problem and a_ strong cabinet will be necessary to insure the proper following in that body. A coalition cabinet composed of demo- erats and progressive republicans is a pos- sibility. The great difficulty in the way of this is the fact that practically all of the strong personalities available foy a . strong cabinet of this type are‘ ‘wiérmbers ‘of ‘the United States senate. Hiram’ W.*Johnson ef &alifornig and Bronson Cutting of New Mexico seém to be men of this type who might be averse to quitting the senate. Senator Glass of Virginia combines all the qualities requisite for an efficient secre- tary of the treasury. He thoroughly un- derstands our banking system and the needs of the country and he is not subservient to great banking interests. Neither is arbitrarily antagonistic to them. But he might not like the idea of giving up his toga. Senator George W. ‘Norris ‘is also a possible appointee, with all the recom- mendations and drawbacks that apply to the others. In Johnson, Cutting, Glass aud Norris probably will be found the extent -of .pas- sible appointees from the senate. “i one STOCK MARKET PROSPECTS The stock market will hardly _ antic- ipate business. It has anticipated business in the past few years, with disappointing results. In the coming year it promises to get off to a slow start. There is not much probability of any great activity in the stock market until the figures of the first quarter show an improvement: in gencral condition. There is a saying that history repeats itself. It has done so in the stock market for several years past. The lowest market point during the past few years has been around the holi- days. In 1932 the recovery, such as it was, did not really start until the end of Mar¢h. The recovery continued from that time yn- til about the middle of September, Ywhen Wall Street discovered that business was in bad shape and the decline began. There will probably be a decline for some months to come. Then improvement can be expected. The present is not the time to buy, if one would buy at the bot- tom. : A BAD YEAR Tomorrow, the last day of December } will mark the passing of one of the worst business years the country has ever known. The year 1252 tory of our country as one of the worst we have ever experienced, not excepting the panic years of 1837, When the reports of businesses every kind have been made, it will found that few of the enterprises of the richest country in the world will show ‘a real profit. They will play three games in Key West, the first to be next Monday night, “The year of 1922 has been al most suceessful for the police de- partment in Key West that I have experienced during my 15 years in office,’ said Chief Whitmore J. Gardner. There were 1130 ar- rests during the year and the vigilance of the officers have greatly aided in suppressing law violations. Fines collected from <qJaw. volators,.in. the city. totalled $10,427.70. The valuation of building per- mits issued during the year 1922 amounts to $110,730. Erection of a bungalow on South street for Paul Herrick will be started next week by Johnson and {Dongo. The cost is placed at $3,- 200. The wedding of Miss Francis Meltzer to Morris Aronovitz will be solemnized tomorrow evening in the Jewish synagogue and a reception will follow the ceremony. Through error it was stated yester- day that the ceremony would be to- night. Taxes fofiected in the offi¢e*of Collector Arthur Sheppard for the} year amounts to $170,396.85. Pay- ments were far more ptompt this j year than in former periods. Fire losses during thé year set a new low mark. There were no! disastrous conflagrations. The to- tal losses amount to but $11,430.
