Peace is not simply the absence of war, but a moving, dynamic thing, a state of understanding and cooperation. Sponging business is reported good in Key West. Here’s hoping European nations don’t hear about it. They might misunder- stand.—Miami News. One headline in a Florida newspaper announces “House Rejects Bill for Wine.” Should it be supposed that this is one of that body’s economy moves? EROS Six nations on December 15 paid part of their war debt to America, They prob- ably take the fact seriously that the re- publicans are going out of office. Hoover claims the schools of the coun- try are approaching a crisis and students, thinking of the semester after Christmas, are willing to agree with him. Buy where the merchant invites you by advertising his goods. If the merchant does not invite you to his place of busi- ness, it is possible that he does not desire your trade. One of the eighty or more grocery stores in Key West has the legend “De- pression Groceries” on a large sign con- spicuously displayed. We have heard of depression prices but not depression groceries. Perhaps the groceries are de- pressed because they are being sold at such low prices. If one uses diplomacy and discretion in molding public opinion, he wil) usually succeed well, but if any person tries to force something over, the public will quick- ly.turn a frigid shoulder to the proposition. Perhaps the main reason the reformers and certain fanatical prohibitionists aren't get- ting the “glad hand.” New problem presents itself. Here’s the lew-down on a matter which may cause the customs officials in the land of the free and the home of the brave to consult their blue books. Miss Birdie Kennedy of Key West came to Havana a few days ago with the express purpose of obtaining, or rather undergoing, the famous Rubenstein beauty treatments of La Casa Inez at Prado 41. Now, after the deed is done, as they say, with this ascendant business, and Miss examinations. coincident with the security market peak. QOver-construction was not recognized in the face of super-prosperous there was no lull in building production. When the bottom fell out of things there was no demand for the excess con- struction and this excess probably had a deal to do with hurrying real estate values to the toboggan. Eight years or more of construction at | high cost maintained the belief in values for a time, but the law of supply and pe Ea mand was inexorable. Values fell to about fifty per cent of their peak value and considerably be- low their pre-war value. So here we are in a state of expectancy, awaiting happier days but with full con- | fidence in their ultimate realization. PROPERTY VALUES IN KEY WEST One of the problems in Key West as well as elsewhere is the relation .of property values of today te the values of the recent past. How far have property values gone back? How far will property values come back? What is a fair intrinsic value of property today? These are all questions that are of interest to all classes of the people of Key West. Along with all other values, property values have fallen to about one-half. of what they were when they were at. their peak. Rents have fallen in response to the fall in values and the problem of today is what is a reasonable rental. Property owners who have been able to determine this value have kept their properties in use, while those who did not or would not see the trend of things in- sisted on a continuance of high rentals and as a result have tained severe losses. A PROFITABLE LOSS ‘The business panic of the past three years in the United States may not prove as regrettable as is generally considered at the present time, for the loss of $75,- 000,000, 006 in security values means that there is possible a saving of interest charges to the United States and its people each year of something like $4,200,000, 000. Had the securities market not col- lapsed, the $75,000,000,000 of value which evaporated into thin air would have de- manded this interest charge, which would have been just about equal to the amount of the annual expenses of our national government, Thus had not the financial collapse taken place, the cost of living in the United States would have been increased by that amount. : The stock market loss, severe as it was to millions of our people, may really have been a blessing in disguise. HANUKKAH On Yahrzeit, anniversary of the death of any good Jew, a candle is lit in his honor, says Time. In synagogues and homes every Friday night candles are burned, and candles figure in many a Jewish ritual observance, particularly Hanukkah, the Feast of Lights (or Maccabees) which celebrate the re- capture of Jerusalem by Judas Maccabaeus in 165 B.
