Well, we all have to make a living somehow. “Premier Herriot declared im the French chamber of deputies Tuesday that President Hoover's debt moratorium was the cause of all the troubles in which the American debtors are involved. When the moratorium was announced, France went wild with encomiums, probably because it thought that was the last of the debts owed thie country, but new that Uncle Sam in- on receiving at Jeast part of what is him, the Prench are yelping. A more favorable showing is made in membership matters, however. There was a gain of 94,288 members, the largest leo gain since 1923, while gains were reported in the number of churches and Sunday schools for the first time since 1925. The gain in Sunday school enrollment was one of the largest ever known in a single year. But in spite of numerical gains, the financial showing is disappointing to the authors of the handbook, who point out that while the membership of 3,944,566 gave less than 33 million dollars to the church, they spent more than 35 million for movies, about 35 million for soft drinks and chewing gum, 40 million for tobacco and more than 48 million for cosmetics and other beauty aids. Which leads Dr. All- dredge, secretary of survey statistics, to exclaim, “God pity and help us!” We don’t know how other would stack up in comparisor hurches with of giving and spending would average about the same as those of the Baptists. Folks will have their iittle luxuries when possible; sometimes, we fear, even a! the risk of neglecting their church obligations. They are Louis M. Howe, Stephen T. Early and Marvin M. MelIntyre, all former news- paper men. Howe has long been ‘associated with Governor Roosevelt and has been: his private secretary at Albany, taking an im- portant part in the governor’s campaign for the presidency. He will live as well as work at the White House. Early is a descendant of General Jubal Early of Confederate fame, and covered the navy department for the Associated Press when Roosevelt was assistant secre- tary under Wilson. He also accompanied Roosevelt during his vice-presidential cam- paign in 1920. McIntyre was once with the Washing- ton Times and during the war had charge of the navy’s press relations, thereby com- ing into close contact with the future presi- dent. For a year McIntyre has been Roose- yelt’s press representative and was very active during the recent campaign. With these three able and experienced newspaper men as his secretaries, it is be- lieved that Mr. Roosevelt’s-relations with the press will be all that could be de- sired. UTILITIES AND TAXES In 1981 tht electrical utilities of the United States paid taxes totalling $210,- 600,000. In the same year the amount paid by all household consumers of electricity was approximately $600,000,000, or less than three times the amount paid by the utilities for taxes alone. ‘ Commenting on these figures, the In- dustrial News Review points out that if the total cost of government in this country, which now amounts to 15 billion dollars a year, could be cut only five per cent the saving. would exceed to the nation’s entire domestic electric bill, In spite of the excessive taxation borne by the industry, the © cost’ | of elec- tricity has decreased 83 per’ cent since 1913, while the general cost of living is nearly 100 per cent higher. Ne other in- dustry that we can think of has equalled that record, yet no other industry has been subjected to such viotent and unjust attacks on the part of demagogic politicians who agitate for the government operation of utilities... As the Review truly says, “had the government been as efficient and economi- eal as the utility industry we would have ho tax problem today.” ~ They give.some | | idea of how the depression is affecting the { |religious zeal and spending habits, of an!
