One of the strangest of all, the “bell torture,” is shown. In this, the victim is bound under a great bell, the crashing notes of which eventually drive him mad. Another terrible punishment that can only be hinted at is the |this school will appear in plays, |tieing of the victim in the path of warrior ants which devour every- thing in their way. Then there is the Chinese punishment for par- ricide, the “ling chee,” or “death of a thousand cuts,” in which the victim is slowly sliced away until he dies—in perhaps eight hours. In the new Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer filmization of Sax Roh- mer’s celebrated story, Boris Kar- loff is seen in the role of the un- canny Oriental monster, Dr. Fu Manchu, who in his world dreams of Oriental power, tortures his victims, heads an amazing plot of intrigue and savagery, and figures in a’ wild attempt to raise Asia against the world. A prominent cast appears under the direction of Charles Brabin. The role of the Scetland Yard de- tective who proves Fu Manehu’s inemesis is played by. Lewis Stone. Karen Morley and Charles Starrett have the romantic leads with Myrna Loy playing @n Oriental siren. Jean Hersholt, Lawrence Grant and David Torrence also have important parts. Among the picture’s spectacular thrills are the Mongol feast in the chamber of Buddhas, the weird Khan, the episode of the flying death, and the artificial lightning and death-ray of Fu Manchu. “TODAY'S HOROSCOPE The indications of this day promise well for a lawyer or poli- ician. There is every evidence of litigation and strife; the disposi- tion is aggressive, contentious, and analytical.
