Bridges to complete Road to Maia: land. | press muzzled, with men thrown Lntered at Key West, Florida, as second elass matter | TOO LATE, MR. MACHADO With the freedom of speech and the into prison for no other reason théh their poli- tical opposition, with the firing of the as- i ue : ; sassin’s bullet under the guise of govern-} mental maintenance of law and order, it is too late now for President Machado to at- tempt te patch up peate with the people of Cuba. “Cuba Libre” tas beeli slashed and torn and has lain bleeding at every pore | since 1930, and is in no condition now to raise her hand to acéépt the proffered | olive branch. The cry of “Peace, peace!” is not for the ears of him whose constitiutional liberty has been turned into 4 farcé and a mockery under the arbitrary rule of a dictator: it is not for the ears of him whose tight has been crushed by might, whose loved ones have been torn away from him to suffer or die so that a usurping government may live. No, Mr. Machado, it is too late, too late now to cry “Peace!” The fire of righteous indignation and resentment, kindled by your ruthless représsion, burns too passionately to be extinquished by,your breathings of proposed peace. Compréhensive City tiaa. Hotels and Aptrtnents. Bathing Pavilion. Aquarium. Airports—Land and Sea. é breathings have turned the firé into 4 con- flagration! % One who has been struck by a hand encased in an iron glove is in no mood to shake that hand wheu the glove has been j taken off. THE KEY WEST CITIZEN WILL always seek the truth and print it witwout fear aud without favor; never be afraid to attack wrong or to applaud right; siways fight for, progress; néver be the or- gan or the mouthpiece Of any person, clique, faction or class; always do its utmost for the public welfare; never tolerate corruption or inj*stice; denounce vice and praisé virtue; commend good done by individual or organ- ization; tolerant of others’ rights, views and opinions; print only news that will elevate nd not contaminate thé reader; never com- proniiae with principle, “Every governmental officer or board that handles public money should publish at regular intervals an accounting of it, showing where and how each dollar is spent:,.We hold this to be a fundamental prinefple of democratic government.” Well, the lame ducks in congress had their first quack, and it didn’t sound so good, The highest service is disinterested service, we are told. But is there such a thing as disinterested service, Mr: Roosevelt is strong for reforestra- tion, but the newspaper boys seem to be finding plenty of cabinet timber for him. “Biisbane" Said in his column Tuesday that Wall Street had a chill when news camé-that the-beer bill ‘had failed As.a matter of fact, and Brisbane should have known this, the beer bill was not even un- der consideration. The vote was on the repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment and was lost. It is possible, rather probable, to have beer without répgaling the Prohibi- tion Law. What the alcoholic content of beer will be is the question. An As- sociated Press dispatch in The Citizen Tues- day stated that Speaker Garner expected action on the beer question by Christmas about the time vote 6h repeal of the Righteenth Ashendment will come up in the senate, The Key West Citizen devotes a lengthy article to the decision of the U. 5. customs courts that the avocado, tretiehtiy called alligator pear, is not related to other pears and can be imported without the! duty of 12 cents a pound imposed 6n ordi- nary varieties, overruling the objection of the Florida Avocado Growers Exchange. Much as Florida growers would have liked to exclude the fruit from dther countries; it would have been rather humiliating ‘to have the avocado dubbed “just an ordinary | pear.” That would be as bad as confusing a delicious Florida mango with a bell mr per or our Papaya with the northern pa- pawe-Miami News. The people of Cuba want no dealings, of any nature whatever, with you, Mr. Machado. Your wrongs have cut so deep- ly into their hearts, they turn their backs on your extended hand and close their ears to your flowery words about the res- toration of constitutional guarantees of civil and personal liberties. There should never have been any need for the restoration of those libérties, and the proposal to restore them is a con- fession of repression. Further, repression predicates that the constitution, the basic law of the land, has been swept aside, made inoperative, by tthe government in power, intrenched in one man, Machado. ‘Think of a president of the United States, or a prime minister of the crown of England, suspending the constitution! An American or an Englishman can not think of that without associating it in his mind with civil war. Only one thing, Mr, Machado, will the people of Cuba accept from you: your resignation, and we think it would be wise for you, after tendering it, to leave Cuba. You are a Cuban and, therefore, know that a Cuban neither forgets nor forgives an injury that has been deliberately and pitilessly inflicted. It is too !ate, Mr. Machado, too late now for any ofter from you except your resignation. HIGH FINANCE RESPONSIBLE Without reference io partisanship, the government of our country for the past twelve years has been controlled by political leaders who in turn have been controlled by the large banking interests which furnished them with campaign funds. These banking interests largely concerned with the prosperity of the governments and bankers of Europe, to whom they have ioaned enormous amounts of money. Controlling our government financial policy, these bankers have influenced de- ferred payments, moratériutns, reductions of loans and other policies designed to re- duce foreign debts to us. Every reduction of this character, every Suspension of interest payments, has been a. direct tax on our own people, for every reduction and every moratorium has simply meant that the reductions >-ant waiving of interest charges have pbeeh at the expense of our people: The bankers, have protected their loans to foreign inter- ests at our expense. They have saved Europe from a bankruptcy that would have cost them their investments in foreign loaits. The American people have paid the| freight. It was time for a new deal.
