Stearns reviewed the record of President Hoover, including among other of his accomplishments during his in- cumbency of office the: granting of $18,- 000,000 for the bridges. Of course this lat- tersum has not yet been granted and when j it ig Hoover will not have had anything to ENDORSEMENT TIME HERE In every presidential campaign there | comes a time when prominent men through- | ‘out the country endorse one candidate or | another. Right at the present moment there are | ja number of declarations for both Hoover |.and Roosevelt, with more coming in every | day. bs The Roosevelt campaign managers seem to be having the better of the ex-} change on these endorsements, as they re- | eeive new names with which to work every { day, while the republican managers seem | to be a bit short of material. | Public leaders of various brands of political affiliation have been flocking to Roosevelt. The names of Senators Johnson, Norris, Cutting, Borah (who has practically re- | pudiated Hoover) and the Farmer-Labor representatives of the Northwest, have been supported by various lexders of thought in the ranks of business and educa- tion, with the declaration of the Scripps- Howard chain of newspapers for Roosevelt coming as a sensational climax. The endorsers of President Hoover up to the present time have been familiar figures. Starting with former President | Coolidge, the list has gone down the line of Republican political leaders, with pram tically no support from independent sources. The names of the few ‘business men who have declared for Hoover have been used over and over again, and none of them have been very impressive. REAL CRIME PREVENTION In the days of pioneering in the West when the Indian was a source of terror to traveling companies and scattered com- munities, some of the more astute leaders | found that it was cheaper to feed the 4 natives than to fight them. Today organized criminals threaten It is hardly practical to try to appease these enemies of society by feeding them, but it is prac- tical to rid the country of habitual criminals } by correction of conditions that school them | in crime. There is little hope of reclaiming the hardened criminal, but it is possible to cut } off the source of supply of habitual crimi- nals. If poverty could be abolished, that would be a big stride toward abolishment of crime. Elimination of the slum, the alley hovel and the dark tenement would stamp out the breeding places of crime. | Give boys and girls ofher outlets than petty crimes for their excess energy and fewer of them will commit major crimes in later life. Boys’ clubs, the Boy Scouts, play- grounds, such institutions as the Y. M. C. A., school athletics and church and Sun- day school activities can provide the inter- ests which center the minds and hodies of the young upon the healthful and bene- ficial, and divert them from the sordid and decadent. HOOVER THE ALARMIST When President Hoover delivered his Des Moines speech it was the effort of a tired and defeated man. It was a speech that evoked sympathy in the heart of the average American citizen. While the peo- ple realized that as an executive Mr. Hoover had not been a success, it was also realized that he had done his best. That his best was not good enough was not the fault of Mr. Hoover, but was due to his limitations. The people realized what a disappoint- ment his failure must have been to him and they sympathized with him in his despair. But when President Hoover, in his second speech, attempted to show that he j had been a success and that but for him the country would have been plunged into Ago Today As Taken From The Files of The Citizen If you were born on this date 10 years ago, your birth- day fell on Friday. eee The Mallory office announced today that the company has auth- orized the expenditure of approx-. imhately $40,000 for remodeling and enlarging the docks at Key West and making other improve- ments that have been scheduled by| officials of ‘the company.
