WEST, FLORIDA, \[France, Seeking To Rival Ruhr, Opens Moselle Canal For MONDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1932. In Lor (By Ansoctated Press) METZ, France, Oct. 10.—A 200- year-old dream of a man-built waterway has just been realized in this iron producing region of France and has given it hopes of} becoming an industrial counter-| part of the German Ruhr. The achievement is the $9,600,- 000 Moselle canal, partially fi- nanced with German reparations. President Albert Lebrum and Pre- mier Edouard Herriot have hailed it as the “iron canal” of France. See Business Help Its potentialities, scarcely con- ceivable to the Duke of Lorraine; who first suggested its need to}! make the upper reaches of the} Moselle river navigable in 1751, are of suck magnitude that French officials hope they will be notice- able in relief of the economic situ- ation. | The canai,\opening the,Lorraine ' metallurgical industry to water} transportation, naturally...is ex- pected to cheapen the production Lof iron and steel at home, But it has a wider, international aspect.
