PAGE EIGHT MEN ON RUM ~ BOAT WOUNDED ON MONDAY TWO MEMBERS OF CREW OF BRITISH SCHOONER ARE PLACED IN HOSPITAL AF- TER LANDING ‘Aésociated Press dispatches this morning report two members of the erew of the British schooner Hazel Lee, a suspected rumrunner, wounded yesterday in a gun bat- tle with hi-jackers about 27 miles east of Anastasia light off the coast of St. Augustine. That Capt. Eants and one member of the crew were landed in a boat rowed by other members of the crew at St. Augustine and placed in a hospital there, the extent of their injuries not being ascer- tained. Capt. George Berry, command- erof the Gulf’ division Coast Guard service, at the headquarters offices here, stated to a Citizen representative this morning that the name mentioned above tor the supposed rumrunning ‘vessel is in- correct, but that he did not think best to disclose the real name of the boat ai this time. Last Sunday night at 8 o’clock, Capt. Berry received a secret mes sage from headquarters in Wash- ington informing him that a mob of tough New York gunmen was enroute ‘o St. Augustine to over- take and hi-jack a rum boat and then land the cargo on the At- dnntie coast, asking that a Coast Guard boat be sent to that vicin- ity. At 9 o’clock, one hour after the Message came, two Coast Guard boats were sent speeding up the coast toward St. Augustine, ihe 298, Boatswain L. R. Daniels, and the’ 292, Boatswain John Hark. Capt. Berry also notified the au- thorities along the coast to keep a sharp lookout that nothing was landed. «As soon as Boatswain Daniels rrives on the scene the boat held vthe hi-jackers will be seized, in |} spite of such machine gunfire as was rained upon the first Coast Guard arriving there. Capt. Berry also ordered three Ge boats to rush to the scene from the Fort Lauderdale station, the 293, Boatswain Del Mar; the 244, Boa‘’swain L. Christiansen; the 294, Boatswain J, A. Jchanssen, responding. Capt. Berry sent wireless in- struction to Boatswain Daniels this morning, instructing him to seize the vessel in spite of her gun- fire if in the hands of hi-jackers and take her to Savannah. “If you have any trouble seizing the vessel, don’t hesitate to sink her,” the message read, and Capt. Berry explained ‘that under the existing imstances the Supposed rum- runner is simply a: pira.e boat. jme important announcement jerexpetiod when Capt. SCOUT OFFICERS MAKE REPORT “ON ENCAMPMENT DESCRIBED IN DETAIL BY OFFICIALS The return of troop 4 Boy ;Scouts Monday morning under command of Scoutmasier J. A. Jenks, was an unexpected disap- pointment not only to the troop, | but to the relatives and friends of the boys as well. Judging from the letters and telegrams. received by Scoutmaster Jenks, previous to the departure of the troop, they designated Clearwater as their camping place in preference to other cities from which they had received invitations thinking that Clearwater and their Boy Scouts would receive them with open arms and make their encampment one of ‘he happiest memories of their lives. On arriving at Tampa Sun- day Aug. 1, the boys: experienced their first disappointment on find- | ing no one to meet them and they to got to Clearwater Beach where without tents or cots for their sleeping purposes, altho the camp | was reported to fully equipped. The boys being real scouts made themselves satisfied, thinking that in a day or iwo everything would be arranged for them. This small tents and not half enough cots to accomodate the personel of 25. Each time a boy walked across the bridge to go to the city he was-foreed to pay a dime an? on arriving there after a long hot walk he must be charged a dime for a cold soda, and for a bit of amusement. They were, literally speaking, soaked fifty cents for a movie. Neither the troop nor the people of Clearwater were the least bit interested in the welfare and entertainment of the ‘boys, which fact isa hard one to face after the royal manner in which their Boy Scouis were entertained in our Island City last year. Due to exposure to the weather and the vast crop of mosquitoes several of the boys became ill with colds and fever which together with the hed to wait until late afternoon|. they were taken and deposited |; length of time brought them five |° of Scout To Make Plans For Fancywork Sale Girl Scouts of Troop 3 will meet at the home of their captain, Mrs. George Archer, 1425 Newton street, on Friday afternoon at 4 o’clock.
