A fearless city official, Comp- tfolier Charles W. Berry, in a publie statement recently, has ex- posed the fact that the 5-cent fare really is about an 8-cent fare. He has shown that the city is being compelled to pay. out of its taxes the difference between the cost of the ride and the fare paid. This @mounts to almost 3-cents on each ride or approximately $13,- 000,000 a year. Berry, in his public statement, has pointed out that the loss of $18,000,000 a year is not the worst part of the situation. The fact that this money is being lost also has acted in a legal way to tie up. the several hundred million about to be made available for building. new. subways. Berry points out that unless the situa- tion is remedied, New York City not only will face a terrific defi- cit which may ruin its credit, but also will be prevented from ex- tending its lines. The extensions are badly needed. Schools, hos- pitals and other public institutions ate suffering because of lack ‘of fonds.
