FRIDAY, JULY 23, 1926. DICK BAKER AND GUS REYES MEET INBOUT TONIGHT | EXCELLENT BOXING CARD TO BE PUT ON AT CUBAN CLUB STADIUM; SEMI-FINAL AND PRELIMINARIES ON CARD Evidencing the best of condi- « tion this morning both Dick Ba- ker, of Miami, and Gus Reyes, of Key West, were rearing at the bit _ to get at one another, in what should prove one of the best bat- tles ever staged in this city at the Cuban Club Stadium tonight. Baker, clever boxer of the Magic City and ‘pride. of the “flappers” of that city of romance, came into the city this morning from his training camp at Miami and is looking fit for his battle to- night.. He has spent the past two weeks at hard work and the re- sult is that he is primed for the i second go with Gus. » — When questioned as to the bat- * tle tonight, Baker asserted: & “He seored a knockout over me ' more-than a month ago in Miami. I was over confident and not of- i fering any’ alibis, but I was not } trained as I should have been. He | is a hard man to meet, however, } and I will have to be on my toes | every minute of the battle. I will ' attempt to redeem myself tonight * by kayoing Reyes.” r From the Reyes ‘camp likewise _ are being circulated rumors of a * coming victory. Reyes has been * training hard for a month in prep- } aration for this return bout with » Baker and is in a finely. drawn -eondition for tonight’s melee. “I am in good shape and expect ; to hit Baker hard,” declared the _ Cuban pride. “And anyone whom as can hit with my right fist, 1 usually subdue.” © Both boxers will weigh in at “about 127 pounds. It will be a ease of a punches in Reyes and a | in Baker. Lovers ‘of swap- ping blows and expert boxing fans “are looking for a thrilling battle. There is no good getting around ‘the fact that this Reyes boy can chit. He sent Baker to the mat ane “times in their first appearance in ; Miami, However, Baker is a “wizard at footwork and possesses ®@ likely punch himself. In the semi-final, Young Franks, former Tampa youth, came is climbing in. local fame, foal with” Prankie™ Arm:| po , of Miami. Armstrong wae ‘substituted today for ‘Battling Kid, who broke his wrist while ‘training for this bout. ) Franks is known as the “Cuban Cyclone,” he packs an awful -wal- “yep in either hand and is a demon ‘for punishment. In Armstrong, phowever, he will tang’e up with a ‘ boy who never knows when he has j enough. The Miamian is tough and <@ willing mixer—'nough said. * Two fast four-round prelimi- /Naries will serve as curtain raisers. f ‘Promoter Paul Albury and Bolivar Castillo, matchmaker, an- fnounce that the bouts will be ~pulled off as scheduled and the feard will be one of the best ever theld in this city. Bob Spottswood pitched master- fully. In the first and second in- nings the first two Navy men to face him hit safely but in each in- istance the Rotes rallied to his support and helped him out of the holes. In the fourth inning Spen- cer hit a circuit smash over George Morris’ head for a home run. This proved.to be the Navy’s lone run. Biery pitched well, for the Navy but the Rotes were out to win and Biery’s team mates did not deliver the runs to back up his excellent twirling. Box score: \ SCnroconeeny Smith, 1b.. Morris, ef. Both teams played good ball but the Marines failure to solve Fritz Lilja’s curves cost them the game. Quinn also pitihed effectively for the Marines. The Marines’ best chance of staging a rally came in the seventh inning. With the bases filled, Ward connected with oné of Fritz Litja’s fast ones and it looked like'a good three base hit. Duke, right fielder for the Coast Guard spoiled their day when he ran into deep center field and made a one hand catch against the band’ stand that would have done credit te the big, leagues. - Arthur, the Marines catcher, was injured in the fifth. inning and had to be replaced by Clem- ents. It is hoped that he will be able to take his place. again Sun- day, when the Coast Guards again meet the Marines at the Army bar- Lracks.
