PAGE TWO C LAWS AT ORANGE CITY IMMENSE NUMBER OF AUTO. MOBILES PASS OVER NEW HIGHWAY OPENED UP FOL- WING COMPLETION ewwere JACKSONVILLE, July 15.— Fropi Orange City and its next dr neighbor, Deland, comes to the Florida State Cham- of Commerce that Orange by no means is as black as has been painted: with refer- @fiee to enforcement of local traf- fie.Jaws. Orange City, until re- WPfitly, paid little attention to the | traffie problems but was forced to do so when motorists took it upon themselves to use State Road No. 8 as a speedway the moment it was completed between DeLand and Lake Monroe through Orange | City. A young child was .run down by a speeder within the cor- porate limits of the little city a few days after the highway was opened and the City Council, feel- ing that safety demanded | the move, employed a traffic officer. The _ highway, was opened to traffic on April 15 and despite the fact that from 300 to 600 vehicles per hour move over it through Orange City the records thow only 37 arrests from that date to last Saturlay. The traffic officer is employed on a salary and not a fee basis and as a con- sequence there is no incentive for him to haul up motorists by whole- sale. : Orange City is one of the few, if not the only city in the state, which permits a speed of twenty miles an hour in the business sec- tion as against the usual fifteen miles. Both the 25 and 20 mile zones are marked and the city goes a bit forther than the average Florida town by having signs at the limits, of the 20 mile zone notifying motorists that they may resume a speed of 25 miles .an hour. Orange fity has not ex- tended its corporate limits in ¢many.years and its enforcement of speed regulctions cannot be 2M inthe ‘same light with that aa .0f, other cities which have ex- _panded their territory recently. ase P9SeRereopoose geese 2 SPeonececeooasenassagece Sixty years old today, Miss Ma- fie Tempest is still a favorite of the English stage and reputed to be “the best dressed woman in ¢4* London.” Back in the ’90s Miss i Tempest was as popular on. the American stage as she was on the English, and she is still: remem- ered by hosts of admirers among theatre-goers.
