FORWARD step in resi- dence construction ts marked by the building of the Herald-Tribune steel frame model home at Tar- rytown, New York, built and dem- onstrated with ‘the co-operation of the Home Owner's Service Insti- } tute. Although the construction of our modern skyscrapers is made possi- ble only by the use of standardized steel shapes which, while taking up little room, are able to bear tre- mendous loads, the use of similar, shapes for dwelhing construction is a recent innovation. Predict Increased Use A rapid increase in the use of steel frames for residences is, however, predicted by officials of the American Institute of Stee: Construction. “The steady deple- tion of our timber reserves,” says Plan of first fioor Charles F, Abbott, Executive Di- rector of the Institute, “tends to- wards an almost prohibitive price for lumber for building purposes. “Steel frames for dwellings will reduce the drain on our forests, and permit the continued use of ‘wood, at @ reasonable cost, for the floors, interior finishings, and for such other use in dwelling con- struction as falls within its natural field. Steel will perform a distinct boon for its fellow building mate rial. Cost Favors Steel “As for a comparison between the cost of wood and steel frames, such a comparison already favors steel. Further standardization and Plan of second floor large scale factory production will still further lower the cost of steel for residence construction, “The fact that standardized steel shapes can be erected more speed- ily and with less expense than un- Standardized shapes of wood will be another factor in lowering costs.” ‘ Reduces Fire Hazard Aside from a decrease in costs for the home builder, it is pointed Above, the steel frame house at : Tarrytown, N. Y. Below, the frame before it was covered up by the walls. out that steel frames ‘possess the further advantage of reducing the fire hazard. The great majority of fires in residences start in the cellar. The use of steel and fireproof composi- tions as a basis for the floors of the first story will act as a check to the spread of the fire. The steel frame house at Tarry- | town has been left-partially com- pleted so that visitors may inspect the steel frame work before it is covered up.
