Phone 256 on the BAAD aaaa a: SATURDAY, JUNE 26, 1926 “STRAND Wonie Says Overwork Is The Curse Of Life Benjamin . Christianson, noted Danish director, who made “The Devil's Circus,” the Metro-Gold- wyn-Mayer picture which shows at the Strand Theatre today for the last time, says his brief so- journ in the United States has con- vinced him that overwork is the curse of Anterican life. The conclusion is not a personal . reflex, according to Christianson, who has also many kind and flat- tering things to say of America, particularly of its girls and wo- men, becatise he says it would be quite impossible to overwork him. This may. be accepted as a fact because the Scandinavian is the prototype of the blond Vikings who once roamed the world in search of hardy adventure. More than six feet tall and of sym- metrical preportions, he is a man of powerful physique ang. tremend- ous vitatity, “Overwork is really the curse of the whole world,” Christianson reflects. “But it really reaches its zenith in America. “Lives of the people who are leading the pace required by the present day economic pressure are being shortened by at least ten years. They are middle-aged when they should still be young. “People shouid have more time for recreation and relaxation. The spirit of play should be diffused. There should be more holidays. I think a midweek holiday every week would be a good idea, In cehanical age where, with machines, every man is doing the work of four or five or even dozens, such an arrangement would not seriously disorganize industry. “After all, we don’t know where we are going, so why hurry?” Christianson’s own life exempli- fies his philosophy. Recognized throughout the world as a maker of suecessful motion pictures, which he writes, directs and acts in, he could be busy every day of the year making pictures. But al- though he has been in the industry fifteen years he has ro record of quan’ity production at which to point. TOMORROW Holt a Lumberjack in “The Ancient Highway” Jack Holt Was been called upon to flirt with extreme danger on many occasions during his screen career with Paramount, but it is safe to say that he will always re- member his many thrilling escapes during the filming of “The An- cient Highway.” “The Ancient Highway” pictur- ized from Jathes Oliver Curwood’s story, teems with thrills. Holt was first called upon to engage in a smashing fistie en- counter with Montagu Love. The action calied for Holt to have traveled all around the world to find Love and avenge his father’s death, caused by Love's machina- tions, Holt tracks Love to the office of the latter, Love in the intervening years having become a multi-mil- lionaire profiteer in the lumber business. In Love’s office Holt and Love battle to a finish, urged on by Director Irvin Willat, who insisted on a real fight. And it was a real fight, Later, in one of the sequences of the story, Holt was ealled upon to race down a raging torrent in a frail canoe, just ahead of close to a million on-rushing logs. Holt’s efforts were directed in getting ‘to a certain point shead of the log jam and there set off @ number of sticks of dynamite, real dynamite, too, This accomplished, the takes another sensational turn, calling for Holt to go to rescue of an assistant, who had slipped and was caught in the logs close by the dynamite charge. The many thrilling sequences were accomplished without any serious injury despite the chances taken, but Holt claime he will al. way member the deep full breath he teok when the pieture was finished, In “The Ancient Highway,” which shows at the Strand Theatre tomorrow, the featured players are Jack Holt, Billie Dove and Montagu Love. theme
