PAGE EIGHT WOULD START BIG REVIVAL IN NEW YORK FOURTEEN - YEAR-OLD GIRL HAS AMBITION TO RE- VIVE OLD FASHIONEFr RE- LIGION (By Associated Press) ! NEW YORK, June 14.—A four-| teen-year-old girl with an ambition to convert all New York to what she terms “old fashioned religion” has begun her campaign from the pulpit of Cavalry Baptist Church. Uldine Mabelle Utley, born in Oklahoma in 1912, who, until two years ago occupied herself with dreams of motion picture stardom, yesterday delivered a two-hour plea for converts to Christianity from the pulpit usually filled by Dr. John Roach Straton, one of the most familiar divines of the country. At the end of the sermon, she cafled upon the large congregation to pledge itself anew to Christ, and virtually the entire crowd arose. Men and women prayed in the aisles of the church, and the few, who failed to a at the young woman’s plea were exhorted again and again until about six re- maned. seated. | Dr. Straton introduced the girl| as the “Joan of Arc of the modern} religious world,” and announced | plans for a city-wide revival cam-| paign she is to conduct in the fall. Miss Utley, whose father and mother travel with her on her re- ligious campaigns, began her ca- reer as an evangelist at Fresno, Calif., two years ago, after she had been converted there. SENATE BOARD CONTINUES ITS INVESTIGATION (Continued from Page 1) taken when the first week of the investigation ended. Senator Pepper and Governor Pinchot, the candidates defeated by Representative Vare; have been heard. Some membezs of the commit- tee would not be surprised to 'sse the total of expenditures—now searly $1,500,000—considerably increased before the inquiry ends. | When the long chapter ef Penn- sylvania is completed, the com- mittee will still be practically at the beginning of its work. Wheeler, general counsel for the Anti-| Saloon League, is interested be-| €anse’of his opposition to the ef- fort.of Atlee Pomerne, former fenator, to regain his seat in con-} gress on the Democratic ticket. Mr. Wheeler, in a statement published today, assailed Mr. | Pomerne's record in the senate, which, he held, “does not agree with the praise giveh by some| partisan newspapers which laud him as a great constitutional law- yer,” and “show that his pre judice in favor of liquor conside ably warped his legal judgment He did not say whether the league plans to join actively in the op- | position to Mr. Pomerne.
