PAGE TWO “MONROE . TODAY One Way To Get Slender Ankles Have you thick ankles? There is one. sure way of get- ting them into sylphlike form if, you will devote a half hour each} day to the following process which | Renee Adorce,, who. plays the} fe: ine lead in “The Black! Lird;” which shows at the Monroe | Theatre today for the last time| says she tried successfully. “Take a straight’ chair,” says Miss Adoree, “with a rung that is, halfway up to the seat,” she con: tinues. “Step up on the rung) thirty times with each foot andj then thirty times’ alternating the| foot. You will find within a week’s time that your ankles are becom-| ing more slender and a marked de- | crease in their size is noted within @ month.” | Mies Adoree, who also plays the| feminine lead in “The Big Parade,” the spectacular Metro+ Goldwyn-Mayer production from the pen of Laurence Stallings, had very slender ankles until she had to give up exercising on ac-! ¢ount’ of being so busy in her; screen work. She had previously. been g dancer and as is the case with all dancers, the muscles that ha¥e"been strenuously used get heavy when they are relaxed for any length of time. She found the above mentioned ¢@xercise just the thing for ankle yeduction and so is passing it on. ‘ Lon Chaney plays the lead in “The. Black Bird,” which Tod} Browning directed for Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer. TOMORROW Record of 200 Fights With No Victory Two hundred fights in years and: loser in every one. Sounds like the record of a Kappily, or scrappily married man, but it really belongs to Pat Harmon, famous motion picture villain. ‘ Harmon staged’ his 200th fight for the films on the Metro-Gol- dwyti-Mayer lot in the photo- graphing of “The Barrier,” Di- rector George Hill's massive \pro- duction of the thrilling Rex Beach movel of the Alaskan frontier, which shows at the Monroe Theatre tomorrow. Previously in the making of tye film, Harmon had been sound- ly beaten by George Cooper, who Flay& © Sergeant ‘Murphy, and Idonel Barrymore, who is Stark Bennett, the brutal skipper, which led Pat to the remark that the dhly thing he has ever beaten since he entered motion pictures ig the bass drum, which he does with finished artistry in the na- tional thampion Elks Band of Santa Monica, Calif. , His Casualty Score Pat has staged losing battles in Pletures with Jack Dempsey, Pat O'Malley, Wally Reid, Tom Sant- sehi,. William Desmond and a host of others, The casualty score is impressive, something like thi Dempsey, broken rib: Pat} @Malley, two broken ribs; Bill] Russell, broken nose; Bill Haines, six stitches in leg; Jack Hoxie, broken arm. A curious fact is that the fights that appeared the most brutal on the screen, some’ so much so that the censors cut them, were the} ones in which he was never seratched. Hurmon literally fought his| way to the place of a screen} eDaracter actor. ‘Sometimes 1 fighting in the films didn’t pa: says Harmon, “then I discovered | it;al depends on the director. Seme directors appreciate aj} fighter and give him a chance. Gradually I got more and more ating to do and now when I fight it’s incidental to acting.” | Harmon is one of “The Bar-| rier’s notable cast, which includes Norman Kerry, Henry B. RAITT IIIS: A. H. McINNIS’ RECORD (Communicated) Much has been said with refer- ence to the candidacy of A. H. McInnis, about his effort to save '% ;for the widow and children of the fate Sheriff what Mr. Curry work- jed so hard to obtain. It is quite jtrue that Sheriff Curry only * |served eighteen months of his two ‘\years, and’ the writer thinks that ‘his family should have the benefit Ru of the office, and knows that Mr. | th McInnis would see that they got)? it. But little has been said with |S}: reference to the qualifications of | Mr. McInnis to hold this important |}; office. The office of Sheriff is 1i: perhaps the most important office in the County. It carries with it grave responsibilities, and the’; man placed in this position should have tact and judgment, should| be a diplomat, should have a level jhead, and at all times be ready to | meet any emergency that might arise. My view is, that Mr. McInnis! / |has all these qualifications, and would be the right man in the right place at this time. He served the people as Sheriff for four years, and at a time jwhen it required a man of more jthan ordinary ability. Shortly af-| jter he took oath of office the! jworld war came on, and this be- jing a seaport city and an impor-| jtant point for the operations of our Government in equipping men | and boats for the war, ‘it will be remembered that this city was a bee-hive of activity. Every branch of the Government was/| represented here, the Army, Navy, Marines, Aviation, Artillery, Coast Guard, Secret Service and all} other branches were represented |! and had thousands of men going and coming at all times. Togeth- er with this we had ‘toughs to deal with, crimes of all kind were being | pulled off and thousands of things coming up daily that required the time and efforts; of a Sheriff. There were numerous investigat- ing committees in and out from | Washington looking after the in-| { terest of the enlisted men in which the Sheriff and other offi- cials were called! in, and it cannot be denied that Mr. McInnis our | pj Sheriff handled) the very difficult ; | situation, came through with fly-| jing colors, and was commended by \the Government. In addition ‘to his duties as | Sheriff Mr. McInnis was called }upon by the Government, and |served as Chairman of the Draft te Board, this required much labor, |‘" many nights of hard work, tact and skill to handle. ta su sw n of | | jal un | de na s er in, Roland Curry, Sheriff, and it is! de well known that he has acquitted | {; |himself well in this capacity.
