RCHIK PHONE 128 \ \ CLEAR TO KEY WESTERS As Mr, Ladd made it a point to launch.a personal attack on Sen-} ator Malone while he is absent from Key West, several friends de-} cided this morning to say a few words in his behalf. The questions Mr. Ladd asked will be answered further on in this article, but what; we wish to. do first is to direct his attention to St. John, VIU, % wherein Jesus says: “_’. . He that is without sin among you, © let him first.cast a stone ... .” ‘ : Even Senator Malone’s worst enemies will not accuse him of being sanctimonious, He makes no pretence of being The Perfect | Man; he readily admits that he is only human, like all the rest of us, with the exception of Mr. Ladd, who is superhuman and: therefore The Perfect Man; Senator Malone will tell you further that he has made many mistakes, and that he is not “without sin,” as Mr. Ladd would have you believe he is. We feel sorry for Mr. Ladd. . We realize that he ant believe | us when we say that, for it is impossible for a-man like him, who wastes much of his vitality in éntertaining petty spites and: atreds, | | to conceive the possibility of anybody who is opposed to lifm feeling sorry for him. But it is: true, very true, that he, of all men, was foolish enough to question th@“fonesty of Mr. Malene or anybody else. compelied us to write this article. this campaign was started. Walter W. Thémpson, when he was manager of the now defunct Consumers’ Ice Company, placed a great trust in Mr. Ladd. Mr. Ladd was lavish in his assurances that he would fylfill his-truth faithfully. But what did Mr. Ladd do? Hundreds of Key Westers know the story, and it is unnecessary to:relate it in detail-here. - Suffice it to say that when Mr. Ladd bought the stock. Mr. Thompson had directed *| him to buy, he slyly, uhknown to Mr. _Thompson, turned it over to the opposing interests, and. Mr. Thompson found himself. shortly’ after- wards out of his job. We could have mentioned instances wherein he did not keep his promises, but we purposely refrained from even the slightest suggestion of mud- | slinging. But now that he has started the mudshoveling, we will ask Key Westers this question: Is Mr. Ladd any more likely to keep his promise to you not to divide Monroe county than he-Kept his promises to those two physi- cians—promiises that he knew when he made them it. was impossible for him to fulfill? Mr. Ladd asked Mr. Malone a series of questions about a-Key Largo tract he bought for a little more than $500 an acre and sold six weeks later for $2,500. Yes, Mr. Malone bought the property for $500 and sold it for $2,500. Incidentally, Mr. Malone;Mr. Ladd, Mr. Strunk and three other Key Westers, some six or eight months before that purchase, bought two tracts of 115 acres on Key Largo. One tract was bought from R. C. Perky for $110 an acre and the other indireetly from this same Model Land Company for $100 an acre. Months later Mr. Ladd, Mr. Strunk, Mr. Malone and the three other Key Westers sold the property for $400 an acre, and BEFORE MR. MALONE GOT HIS SHARE OF THAT SALE HE WAS NEGOTIAT- TRACT. S The company held out for $500 an acre, and, before contracting to buy at that rate, Mr. Malone wired to a Key West real estate agent to learn if the price of Key Largo land had increased to that extent, and was told that prices on-Key Largo were skyhooting. :As Key Westers are aware,'the prices of Key Largo acreage were. increasing so fast overnight it wellnigh took one’s breath away. It required | to $2,500 an acre, and it-took LESS THAN FOUR WEEKS for it to} jump from $2,500 to $5,000. “As a matter of fact, TWO WEEKS af- i ter the time the*Key Westers contracted to buy Mr. Malone’s tract | for $2,500, a small tract on Key Largo had sold for $6,500, an acre, and a WEEK BEFORE MR. MALONE’S BUYERS HAD. CLOSED} | Yes, Mr. Ladd, Mr. Malone’ has a Florida East Coast Railway , just the same as your mentor, P. L. Wilson, has, and your other | icker, W. J. Krome has.. Mr. Malone has his pass because he is | | the local attorney of the railroad at the munificent salary of TWEN- | | TY-FIVE DOLLARS A YEAR. Of course, Mr. Malone is paid a fee | | by the railroad when he acts as their attorney in a ease—just the } same as you pay a lawyer a fee to handle your business. | You, Mr. Ladd, nursing your petty spites and hatreds, may re-| | fetse to believe anything we say, but we assure you that it is the| | TRUTH, the whele TRUTH and nothing but the TRUTH that Mr.) } | Malone did not know any more about that water bill being held up| | in the engrossing room of the sénate than you knew, or any other | Key Wester knew, What object could he possibly have for holding} it up? We are familiar, Mr. Ladd, with the insidious Propagansia | tabout the railroad not wanting a pipe line of water extended to} Key West. But the ridiculousness of that propaganda can be readily} appreciated by anybody who knows that it costs the railroad hun- | dreds of thousands of dollars yearly to bring water to Key West, and | that most of that money could be saved were the railroad able to} | buy water here. Besides, Mr, Ladd, as every Key Wester who reads) the Citizen-knows, the railroad officials; when Capt. Stearns, chair-| man of the Board of Water Commissioners, called on them, showed every disposition to facilitate the extension of the water pipe line} rem the mainland to this city. The propaganda said that the rail-{ read was not going te let the commissioners use its right of way for! the pipe, all of which, as readers of The Citizen know, turned out; to be false. Mr. Ladd, Key West has at least two sincere friends in Home-/ ‘tead, and they are keeping us informed of the movements of the} Redland county adveeates who are supporting you. Their latest move | & to try to find a way to make Key Westers believe that they are/ against you, and it will not surprise us the least bit should one had the Homestead papers carry a story to that effect.
