Some people are so modest that they shrink from facing the naked truth, General Butler possibly got his bad teeth from Sx association with the Volstead law. [ Our belief is that the fellow who advanced the fidea of killing two Sate with one stone was a dastere faker. Many of the young people are doing some Fi tvery serious thinking as to where they can find ithe best soft snaps, : ; Those two New York newspaper men who were Host for two days in the Dismal Swamp in Virginia {should now. have more sympathy for yokels who pvisit: the metropolis. CRIME AND SCANDAL Among the resolutions passed by the recent {Pan-American Céngress of American journalists, was one ‘that newspapers. should wiki QB sae? ‘detail of crimes and scandals. ; The great majority of newspaper men. do not sdesire to publish these intimate details, which, fre- {quently encourage crime and. give people the idea ithat wrongdoing is a kind of universal thing. ; The newspaper that dwells principally upon ‘the constructive ‘bide of human affairs, and places ‘ts firSt emphasis on the development of the com- guunity, and keeps its columns clean, will please a jmultitude of people. THINKING. ABOUT CLOTHES were hee Sir John Lavery, an English painter who re- ently returned home, remarked that he did not dike painting American women as well as English women, because he felt the Americans were think- Sng too much about their clothes, which would paturally make them more self conscious. . Probably he referred more to society women, y of whom do not have enough serious inter- fests to keep their minds normal. “If he could see athe way millions of American women work in and ‘outside of their, homes, he might feel differently. irre next time, he comes over, it might be suggest- ea that he paint.the women whose first idea is use- wfulness and achievement, rather than those who him first for charm. and physical beauty. . HONORS TO JEFFERSON Honors have been recently paid to Thomas Pefferson, and a memorial in recognition of his ices .was recently unveiled to mark the birth- place of that statesman at Shadwell, Virginia. *While opinions profoundly differ as to the value of is service, his personality had about as much to Yo with shaping the character of this government as that of any. one man. i : He stood pre-eminently for the idea of human Hreedom, and that idea has become the dominating Principle of American institutions. This country blished universal schools and universal suffrage, &o carry out*that principle. ~ We astonished the world by the success of hose principles, which previously had been re- (garded as visionary and theoretical. The principal @ations have since followed our example to a large extent in establishing those ideas. . ain " * BATHING BEACH AND|PIER NEEDED A bathing beach and pier form one, of the greatest needs of this city at the present time. Key West cannot expect to take her. place. along with other resort cities of Florida’ withouf.a nicely ap- pointed place where home folks, and visitors may enjoy a dip in the surf from, time.to time. One of the main attractions for the seaside sojourner is the thrill of a swim in the salt seas and the benefits to be derived from frequent plunges: in the briny blue. Key West has an ideal. place for a beach, at La Brisa, and it could bg improved at slight cost in comparison with what nice beaches have cost other resort cities in this state. The sand, almost pure white, Was there in former years, local peo- ple affirm, but was taken away to be used for commercial purposes. It will take a long time for the natural flow of the tide to replace this sand, but it could pe supplied from other places on the shore line, and at no great expense. A suitable building for bathing lockers, a pavi- lion for dancing, roller skating, parties.and picnics, refreshment stan‘s and eating places, at the end of the pier would soon be one of the busiest and most interesting places in Key West. Such a proposition properly arranged and con- structed and correctly managed would undoubtedly prove to be one of the best paying investments in the city, and it would be practically a year ‘round enterprise. The Citizen would be glad to see some pro- gressive individual or concern acquire La Brisa and make the place what it ought to be. Satisfactory results would certainly follow. APPEAL TO PATRIOTIC KEY WESTERS Be a genuine, red-blooded American. citizen. Go to the court house, pay your poll tax, qualify and vote. You can’t even be a-good sport unless you vote. If you don’t pay your poll tax and vote, you-are not toting fair with the city, county, state. and nation that affords you life and liberty and Tove. You must help along in maintaining the operation of your government and you must have a voice in selecting good and suitable people to fill public offices. if you do not. The only way-to elect good people to office is to vote for them. Without, votes they can never be elected. Your failure to vote, and'several others, You cannot be an ideal citizen like you, may result in the defeat of an ideal can- | didate and the election of one most unsuitable. And it would be your failure to vote that caused it. Not to vote at all is almost as bad as voting wrong. It is a patriotic duty of every American citizen to yote, if it is possible for them to qualify, Be an American citizen, At least, be a good sport. Get yourself fixed up right and vote. Three days after today, and the opportunity to qualify will close, in so far as the June primary is concerned. > Men and women, do you want good fpeople to fill the public offices in‘ your city, county, state and nation? If you do, you’ll haye to vote for them. Awake toa sense of your patriotic duty. Get ready to cast your ballot—and vote right. KEEPING OUT OF WAR The desire to kedp out of war has become an intense purpose on the part of the’American peo- ple. They can see how war creates burdens that drag a country down for a generation, and they propose to keep out of such destructive conflicts in future if they can. The danger of getting into war is variously considered by different people to come from cer- tain sources, such as the following: 1.—The danger of invasion. Gonsidering how protected the United States is by great oceans, this danger is almost negligible now. 2,—Entangling alliances with “European pow ers, which could get us into war from having to take the part of some-ally with whose affairs we become connected. As the United States is firm- ly set-against formal alliances with foreign this danger is slight, : 3.—Invasion of our rights in case the Euro- pean powers get to fighting again. principal danger, and about the only one that needs to be considered much. rope, one of those powers might do the things that Germany did, such as sinking our ships, or sinking ships on which Americans were travelling on law- ful errands. Then conditions might arise when powers, this country would seem yery weak and forceless | if it could not protect its own citizens, and we i! would be expected to go to war to establish their | rights, and put down lawless nations that chal- lenged these rights.
