LADY GOVERNOR TALKS ’ : i] ‘ ; } Movernor Nellie Taylor Ross of Wyoming has a lot of good sound sense since she has the position of chief executive of her and has not evidenced a disposition to un- dtly seek the limelight. * Therefore, her views on problems of the day, ly those concerning women, are worthy of Consideration. In a recent address to an or- ganization of Girl Scouts, of which she in an hon- ofary, member, she said: | “1 am old-fashioned enough to believe that wo career for women is as glorious or satisfying ae that which wifehood and motherhood offers, and it is there she fulfills her highest destiny.” + «But Mrs. Ross also defended the modern girl and declared that modern dress is not only more ansible, but promotes health and grace. There is one thing in which there is no over production, and that. is .of intelligent thought. Those who know how to do“their own thinking are always able to command interest. Take if in the field of the preacher, for stance. You can find innumerable churches in the United States where the congregations ae scan- ty. . That:may be due largely to the ‘fact that the populay mind is absorbed by amusements and money making. And yet you also find crowded churches, Jp such churches there is usually in the pulpit a magn who has .the power of original thought. It is the same'in the field of statesmen- ship or the ‘lecture platform. p The reason why many people. lack: the. power of thought, is that they aceept the statements that they-cead in the newspapers or that someone gives them, without any effort to go over these subjects by their own process of reasoning. They should ask themselves if these things are true, and if they accord with the facts of their own experience. That power can'not be acquired all at once. But if people in their youth will form this habit of considering the statements’ that are made to them in a dispassionate way, afd reaching conclusions of their own based on their actual observation and knowledge, they will gradually gain this power of originality. Their words and ideas will be listened to. : in- There are many persotis who doa good deal of thinking, but they do not command espect be- cause they do not think straight. Their minds ate governed by prejudices, and they can not see things in afi-impartial- way. The: popular ¢ommon sense rejects their views. But if a person can think, and if one’s thought ‘shows seandor and. in- telligence, one will count in agen ast oe or pro- fesaion he a found. EVANGELINE BOOTH’s DOG (Buffalo Evening Times.) Dog heroism, dog intelligeneé tox loyalty and deg lovableness ere part, and one ef the best parts, cf huinan history. Here is ‘another instance related a few days ago by the Associated Press: NEW YORK.—Retarning to duty-after near- ly four. months of illness, Commander Evangeline Booth. national leader of the Salvation Army, told ber comrades last night in the army/s headquar- ters that her shepherd ‘dog, Maszie, bad saved her life one night during ‘her iliness by going for help. Miss Booth became seriously ill shortly before Christmas. One night in February she awoke, ex- periencing “a strange sinking sensation,” Sind un- able to mové her arms or call for heip. Miss Booth finally awakened the dog sleeping by her bed and whispered, “Get Giddie,” the nick- name of her attendant, Major Mary Wells. Miss Booth said that Mazie rushed off at once and paw- ed the bed¢lothes of Miss Wells’ bed, Miss Booth heard the attendant tell the dog to-keép silent, and soon Mazie returned to his mistress’ bedside. Sent off again, Mazie caused such a stir that Miss Wells investigated, found Miss Booth in a serious con- dition and administered artificial respiration until the doctor arrived. The least we can do ts show our respect and gratitude to these faithful creatures is not to chain them up in kennels, or keep them tied to dog houses, or have them too tightly muzzled. They are cours- ing animals, that is, it is part of their nature to run back and forth. Hence to confine them unduly is to increase their nervousness and to inflict upon them «# cruelty, perhaps the very worst te which short of deliberate torture, they could be subjec- ted. as such!
