It} ‘Was propelled by an unseen force and as it wended its way, it puff- @d.and groaned and squeaked. Horses reared on their hind legs and tugged at their hitching lines; dogs barked their disapproval and man for shelter, while astounded bystanders could only look on in open-mcuthed amazement. The world was viewing its first auto- mobile. if that first car could amble. down that same street today, the attention it would attract would be almost as great as its first trip. What a far cry it is from the modern, well-upholstered and _ bomfortable sedan of today back to that first rough attempt at automotive engineering. | What Progress and deve’opment those thirty. years have seen. And yet, this story can be simulated in al- most. any new industry. Experi- mentation, discovery and improve- ment is an industrial cycle that repeats itself in every new line, 80 that the history or story of that line viewed from a perspec- tive! of forty years reads like ro- mance. | The jautomobile and baking powder ‘were two new industries starting in a contemporary period, the latter part of the nineteenth 7 century. Baking Powder as ~ commercial: article had a twenty year start on the automobile, but the first products Of either are teday curiosities in their respec- tive lines. Despite the fact that baking powder ‘is ‘still a white powder and looks like its first an- eestor, the changes it has under- ~ gone are nearly as radical as those more visible changes in the auto- mobile.
