FORCE MAKES ROUNDS OF CITY YESTERDAY Sheriff Roland Curry, accom. panied by Deputies Albury and Dillon, made a round yesterday and gathered in all the slot ma- chines they they found along the way. Four slot machines were seized, but none of them were in opera- tiey, each having been put out of use by.the proprietors of the places visited. Sheriff Curry says the pro- prietors had complied with the law in stopping the operation of the machines, but that that they belong to may be subject to prosetution. RECENT VISITOR SUICIDES AT HAVANA HOTEL H. M. COLE, PROMINENT MAN- ‘UFACTURER OF MEMPHIS LEAPS FROM THIRD STORY OF, STRUCTURE . Passing through Key West last Friday with*his wife en route to Havana, H. M. Cole, prominent manufacturer of Memphis, Tenn., committed suicide in Havana at noon Wednesday by jumping out of the third story window of the Hotel Lafayette in that city. The body, accompanied by Mrs. Cole, and a sister of the deceased, Miss Francis Cole, arrived on the steamer Northland last night. G. Frank Sawyer, of the Lopez un- dertaking establishment, looked after the transfer of the body here, complying with a telegraphic request from a Memphis under- taker. The sister passed through Key West Wednesday, the same day of her brother’s tragic death, ex- pecting to join Mr. and Mrs. Cole for a pleasant and _ interesting visit in the Cuban capital city, and her arrival there was one of the saddest features in connection with the appalling event. Reports say that Mrs. Cole was in the room with her husband when he made the leap from the window, but did not note his ac- tion until he was dashing earth- ward. The tragedy occurred when the street was crowded with traf- fic and was witnessed by hun- dreds of people. Death was in- stantaneous. The rash act is attributed to ill emmy and burden of business mat- SHIPPING BODY OF ALBANY'S - ‘REMAINS WILL ARRIVE IN KEY WEST THIS AFTER- NOON; DIES FROM INJURIES IN HAVANA The body of William S. Hackett, mayor of Albany, N. Y., who died Thursday in Havana, will. arrive today from Cuba. He died from injuries suffered on the evening of February 16, when he was hurled from an automobile. The aceident occurred when the car struck a ridge in the road. Mrs. Hackett, son and daughter will accompany the body. For days Mr. Hackett lingered in a comatose state. -Later he. showed signs of recovering but early this week he suffered a Serious relapse when erysipelas set in in the wound on his head. The Albany mayor was in the first year of his third term. He had been mayor of the city for. five years. The body will be taken to Al- bany for burial, arriving here this afternoon. A large number of friends. will accompany Mrs. Hackett to New York. Tonight And Sunday Last Performances of Show At San Carlos Tonight and Sunday night will be the close of a series of three entertainments by S. Paoli, French tenor, and Georgette de Lorza, French dancer.
