TWENTY BLOCKS OF RESI- DENCES ARE BURNED IN FIRE AT ARKANSAS RIVER TOWN (By A ted Prexs) NEWPORT, Ark, March 2.— With troops patrolling the streets, inhabitants of this little river town today began making plans to rebuild more than 200 homes destroyed by fire which swept 20 biocks of residences yesterday. While not under martial law, the city was policed by national guardsmen to prevent looting. With the 100 tents, 500 cots, and 1,000 army blankets, which arrived here today from Little Kock, temporary headquarters were arranged for those made homeless by the conflagration. Last night the homeless were shel tered in churches, schools, and homes not destroyed. Mayor E. L. Boyce’s relief com- mittee surveyed the situation and Mr. Boyce said it would be decided later what help was needed. “I don’t think we will need outside help after today,” Mayor Boyce said. “Newport will try to take ESTABLISHES “MUSIC WEEK” FLORIDA’S FIRST GRAND OPERA SEASON OPENS IN ‘ MIAMI MARCH 8 MIAMI, Fla., March 2.—Flor- ida’s first Grand Opera season, March 8 to 15 inclusive, at Mi- ami, has caused Edward E. Dam- mers, Mayor of Coral Gables, at which suburb the operas will be sung, to issue a proclamation es- tablishing “Music Week.” The proclamation reads: “Whereas the city‘of Coral Gables in the state of Florida is a music loving community, and includes in its citizenry many yersed in the musical ‘arts. “And whereas its citizenry is | forever fostering the development of the arts and science for the betterment of civilization. “And whereas. the Chicago Grand Opera company will ap- pear for eight consecutive days beginning on the eighth day of March, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and twenty-six at the Stadium of Coral Gables. “I, as mayor of the City of Coral Gables, state of Florida, do hereby proclaim and set aside the + | week beginning on the 18th day care of itself.” Damage by the fire was esti- mated today to run as high as $1,000,000, with a complete check likely to show 300 or more home- less and several churches and manufacturing plants destroyed. An aged negro woman, an ex-slave, was critically burned, a negro child is missing, and several others were injured in the conflagration. The fire, starting in a little cabin, spread to the V. O. Jones Lumber Company’s plant, and then to the Merriman Cooperage Com- pany’s mill. Fanned by a high wind, it spread rapidly from dwell- ing to dwelling until efforts at} staying its disastrous flight seemed | hopeless. Fire apparatus from four surrounding towns, respond-! ing to distress calls, brought the flames under control late last night. Troops patrolled the streets throughout the night to prevent) possible renewal of the fire as a} result of sparks being blown from) . the blazing heaps of debris. Major 8. B.
