THE KEY WEST CITIZEN PAGE TO ENJOY GRAND OPERA IN MARCH GOVERNOR MARTIN AND SEN- ATORS FLETCHER AND TRAM- MELL TO ATTEND OPENING PERFORMANCE MIAMI, Feb. 24—1In announcing arrangements for the first grand opera season to take place at Miami, March 8 to 15, J. K. Dorn, President of the Miami Coliseum Corporation under whose auspices the Chicago Grand Opera Company is being} brought to this state, has issued the following statement: “Governor John W. Fletcher | and Park Trammell have been in-/ vited and are expected to attend the | performance of “Aida” on the eve-/| ning of March 8, the first event of } nine performances by the Chicago Civie Opera. ‘ “Arrangements for presentatidn | of. these operas have been completed. | It is costing approximately $250,000 | to arrange for these productions in | the same elaborate manner and with | the same scenic investure that eharacterizes their Chicago appear-} ance. ! “In view of the fact that no build- | ing in Miami is large enough and no} Stage big enough, we have chartered | the Stadium at Coral Gables ‘and ‘are putting a cover on it and have erect- | ed a stage 70 feet high, with a plat-| form 80 feet wide and 50 feet deep. A wooden floor has been installed and regulation opera chairs are be- ing placed. This all costs a lot of money, but we wish to make the sea- son an annual success and, there-{ fore, are giving the opera the finest | possible setting. It had been our} original intention to use the Coli-| seum, but owing to freight embargo; this building will not be ready. Hence our elaborate preparations for use of the stadium.” | See eae ee eee se eeseerese * . * Sere ereeeeeee st eeeneee 1809—The historic Drury Lane Theatre in London destroyed by fire. 1816—Charles Inglis, the _ first bishop of Nova Scotia, died at Hali- fax, Born in Ireland in 1734, 18 The war between the British Gad ese was ended with a treaty of peace. 1837—Marie Seebach, a celebrated | German actress who appeared in; America in 1870, born at Riga.
