Lynch, president of the International Typo- graphical union, with headquarters at Indianapolis, is slated for public printer. Senators Hughes and Martine and the New Jersey delegation in con- gress, who came to urge President Wilson to select Cornelius Ford, pres- ident of the New Jersey State Fed- eration of Labor, were told Lynch had been practically decided upon. Society Woman Ends Life. Menomonie, Wis., April 15.—Mrs. F. D. Brown, a leading society woman and wife of a well known traveling salesman, ended her life by jumping into the Red Cedar river from a high road bridge. Her body was recov- ered in a few minutes. No reason is known for her act. Steerage Rates Slashed. Hamburg, April 15.—Another step in the transatlantic rate war between Burope and Canada was taken by the Hamburg-American company when it amnounced that the steerage rate be tween Hamburg and Quebec was to be reduced to $25 instead of $30 for May. Former Police Chief Dead. Chicago, April 15.—Former Chief of Police George K. Shippy is dead here. Mr. Shippy had been ill for some time and recently was committed to an in- sane hospital, from which he was sent home when it was evident his death was near. Memphis Flood Its Abating. i Memphis, Tenn., April) 15.—Spread- ing rapidly over the lowlands of East- ern Arkansas from gaps torn in the levee last week the Mississippi river flood is fast abating its onslaught on the embankments along its central reaches. Giady and Stokes & Co., the cost of the items not bid upon, at the lowest prices of the other bidders, it was found that their bids complete would have been $231.62 and $227.41 respective- ly. The bid of the Itasca Mercantile Co. being the lowest, they were awarded the contract. It being the time set for the consid- eration of the re-appointment of the teachers for the city schools, the mat- ter was taken up. Miss Twinam and Mr. Holmes having declined re-appoint- ment, their names were not considered. The following were re-appointed: R. C. All bids to be sealed and accompanied by a certified check for 5 per cent of the amount of the bid, and to be received until 2 p, m. of Monday, April 14, 1913. Grand Rapids, Minn., March 24, 1913 A meeting of the school board of School District No. 1 was heid in the board’s office in the Central school building at 2:30 p. m. C. E. Burgess, C. H. Dickinson and J. D, Doran were present. A request was received for permission to hold dances in the Anderson school building, which request, was, upon mo- tion, denied. A petition was received, asking the board to change the location of the proposed new school building at Black- berry. It was moved that the action of the board at its meeting of March 17, in fixing April 14, as the date for receiving bids for building a consolidat- ed school building near Blackberry be reconsidered, and that April 14 be fixed as the date for deciding upon location of the proposed new building. The mo- tion was carried. The written assignment of Miss Ber- tha K. Baldwin of the sum of twelve dollars, out of her April salary as teach- er of the Hanson Lake school, to J. C. Hendricks was received and was, upon motion, accepted. There was received the written assign- ment of John Lund, janitor of the Forest Lake school, of the sum of forty- three and 20-100 dollars to be paid to W. C. Tyndall in the folowing manner; out of his March salary, ten dollars; out of his April salary, eighteen and 25- 100 dollars;, out of his May salary, fourteen and 95-100 dollars. Said as- signment was, upon motion, accepted. The salary of E. H. Dorothy for trans- porting the Staley and Dorothy children to the McKinley school, was, upon mo- tion, increased from twenty to twenty- five dollars, to take effect from January 1913. Grand Rapids, Minn., April 7th, 1913. A special meeting off the County board of Itasca County, was held at the Coun- ty Court House in the Village of Grand Rapids this 7th day of April, 1913, at 2 o'clock p. m., for the purpose of con- sidering the matter of the foundation for the bridge to be built across the Bigfork River on County road No. 28, in township 62, range 25. Members present—Commissioners King, Passard and Nelson, Assisstant State Engineer Oscar J. Lid berg and Bert Russell, representing the Hennepin Bridge Co., the contractor, were presnt. Assistant State Engin- eer, Mr. Lidberg, reported that he had made a close examination of the site of the proposed bridge, and of the foundation for the piers in the river bed at that point, and would recommend that some additional footings be placed under the main piers. After a consider- able discussion of the matter the board adjourned to meet at 7 o'clock p, m., at which time the County Attorney was requested to be present. Pursuant to adjournment the board again met at 7 o’clock p. m. Members present—Commissioners King, Passard and Nelson. The County Attorney, Assistant State Engineer and a representative of the Hennepin Bridge Co., were present. Commissioner Nelson moved that the action of the board taken at the meet- ing held March 27th authorizing the Hennepin Bridge Company to increase | the height of the piers to 10 feet above high water mark for the additional sum of $375 be rescinded. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Passard and carried by unanimous vote. Upon the recommendation of Assistant | State Engineer Lidberg, Commissioner Nelson moved that a concrete base 2% feet long, & teet wide and 2 feet deep 10 any of be placed under each of the piers support- ing the main span of Bridge, as shown by the plan, and that the Hen- nepin Bridge Co. be allowed the sum of $450, for the extra concrete’ work re- quired for putting in such additional sup: ports for said bridge.
