{ CoHAS SET HERALD-REVIEW IT PAYS TO ADVERTISE COHASSET, MINNESOTA, OCTOBER 9, 1912 BOOST FOR COHASSET COHASSET HAS = MODERN JUDG Police Justice Burgess Believes New Method Makes Better Citizen- ship Than Jail System. The rational methods of dealing with youthful offenders against the statutes which have been brought in- to vogue by Judge Lindsey of Coloracg ane being practiced at Cohasset by Justice C- E. Burgess—and the re~ sults promise to be as satifactory as, those obtained by the Denver jur- ‘ist. Several days ago three school boys, aged from 13 to 16 years, were tak- en before Judge Burgess changed with stealing fruit from the cellar of Jos Webber. According to the state code the boys were guilty of theft, but Mr. Burgess believes there are better ways of dealing with juvenile misdemeanors than through imprison- ment . Acting on this assumption he called the boys before him and talk- ed the matter over with them, ex- plaining the nature of their offence. They agreed that they deserved pun- ishment, and were sentenced by the justice to dig potatoes for one and, one half days, which task they, willing ly performed. Mr. Burgess’ advanced methods of dealing with juvenile delinquents has not been used in the country districts, although practiced in the large cit- ies, but he asserts the theory equal- ly applicable no matter where ap- plied and that the system will result in better citizenship than the old method of fine or imprisonment.
