Foreigners are virtual prisoners in | the legation compounds. The outcome | is impossible to forecast, but the final test must come before many days. The streets of the city are hideous with headless bodies in advanced state of decomposition. The stench is frightful and the danger of plague is very grave. The bodies are those of the men punished for looting during the recent rioting. Few were guilty. Not a six gle body observed in an extensive tour of the city was in uniform. They were slain because it was necessary to provide victims to back up Yuan’s declaration that bandits were being punished. Most were coolies. ROOSEVELT TURNED DOWN Rejected as Juror in Personal Injury Case. Mineola, N. Y., March 13.—Theo- @ore Roosevelt, who was drawn as a juror in the damage suit of Michael Carmody against the New York Cen- tral railroad, was quickly eliminated by John G Graham, counsel for the plaintiff, who challenged the colonel peremptorily. Why he exercised this right the law- yer did not explain. Carmody had both legs cut off and at a previous trial obtained a verdict of $30,000 against the railroad. The appellate division reversed the judgment and ordered a new trial. Colonel Roosevelt plainly was dis- concerted when he stepped down from the box. “I am ready to do my duty,” he said, “but I don’t see why I should have to come here day after day if mobody wants me as a juror. I don’t Bee what the boy (Carmody) was afraid of, for I certainly would have given him a square deal.” CUBANS ARE BELLIGERENT Legistator Says Veterans Would Re- sist Another intervention. Camaguey, Cuba, March 13.—Gen- eral Fernandez de Castro, during the assembly of the veterans which lasted throughout the night, declared that should the United States attempt an- other intervention the veterans of Cuba would fight as they had fought egainst Spain. He was enthusiastical- Wy applauded. ‘The general assembly discussed for many hours a resolution to demand an imvestigation into the sources of the wealth of all the members of the ad- ministration, including the president of the republic, and this finally was agreed to.
