FORM MINNESOTA SOCIETY FOR PEACE Prominent Men Address Gath- ering at St. Paul, The Minnesota State Peace society was organized at the old capitol) at St. Paul for the purpose of a/ popular campaign of education to de-| velop a strong public sentiment in fa- vor of world peace, the settlement of disputes by arbitration or judicial pro- cess and the establishment of a sim-| ple, effective agency through which | the people of Minnesota at any time can voice their sentiments in favor of | peace, Governor Eberhart presided at the mass meeting. Those who addressed the gathering were the governor, Louis Betz, Edward L. Hunt of New York, who is promoting the peace movement; Dr. Cyrus Northrop, Pro- fessor George W. Davis, J. A. O. Preuss, F. C. Hoffman, J. W. Olsen and Rabbi Rypins. All expressed in eloquent terms their ideas of amenity and concord among nations. McLain and Miss Ella Pat terson. § CASH ROAD TAX IS KILLED Abolishing Labor Option. The senate killed the Peterson house bill requiring payment of road taxes in cash and abolishing the highway labor taxes in towns and the office of overseer of highways and providing for the appointment of an inspector of highways. The senate spent another afternoon discussing the statewide primary bill, amended it so that its friends hardly recognized it and then ordered it re- printed as amended and placed it on the calendar to be voted on. Apology, inclusive and complete, was made to the speaker of the house of representatives by F. L. Klemer. Mr. Klemer is the member from Rice eounty who electrified the house and started things by casually remarking that the house committees had been packed in favor of the special inter- ests. SIGNS THIRTY-THREE BILLS Minnesota Governor Approves That Many So Far. Just thirty-three bills have been signed by the governor and deposited with the secretary of state. Two years ago on the same date ninety bills had gone through the same course, al- though the session convened five days later at that time. The senate in committee of the whole approved Hanson’s bill to pro- hibit the sale of malt liquors, except in saloons or for medicinal purposes at drug stores. There was only a ject of the bill is to stop the sale of beer under the guise of malt. It took the house two and one-half hours to pass twenty-four bills. Of /portance. Makes Attack on Jailer. Martin O’Malley, who last October was sentenced to be hanged for the poisoning of his two stepchildren and who is confined in the Le Sueur coun- ty jail, tried to kill his night watch. He hurled a cuspidor at the keeper, Thomas Mouldry, but it hit the door ‘and was broken. Minnesota Legislator Dead. W. A. Fisher, member of the house of representatives from Minneapolis, fs dead in that city. Mr. Fisher had been sick since early in the ses sion and his death was not entirely un- expected, although recently it was said that he had a chance of recovery. Su.cessfully Passes Crisis.
