GRAND RAPIDS HERALD REVIEW Wednesday, December 14, 1910. PERE: SAE . ms SOME CHRISTMAS SUGGESTIONS Send Your Presents Now, Marked Do Not Open Until Christ- | mas. Here are a few Christmas sugges- ‘tions that if practiced would relieve the congestign at post amd express | offices the day before Christmas end for many days after. Send your presents now, ane | “@o not open until Christmas.” In | this way the post and express ot- | tices are given sufficient time in which to get them sorted out and de- livered, the carriers, having more time, are less liable to make~ mis- takes, and the presents will thus arrive in ample time to be opemed on Ghristmas morning. When they are left until the last minute, the chances are they will not be received on scheduled time. Amother common practice is for people, during the holiday season, to purchase presents that are hurriedly tied up by the clerks, scarcely secure enough to be carried home, in which cendition they are presented for wailing or expressing, possibly to go nundreds of miles, frequently piled | with tons of other similar packages, and finally dumped from some fast train, with, in a great many nstamces, all marks of identifica- vien eradicated. When packages are mtended for mailing or expressing, ‘he one tieing them up should at least be informed that they may vaake them as secure as possible. it's a better plan to take them home und securely wrap them yourself, BELTRAMI NOW . OUT OF A JOB New Jail Ready At International Falls and Beltrami County Re turns Prisoners. The prisoners of Koochiching coun- ty, who have been committed to serve terms in jail, by the courts of that county, have been removed | trem the Beltrami coumty jail, the official place of incarceration for Keochiching county and , taken to international Falls, to be committed © the new county jail at that point. But three prisoners remained in ihe Beltrami county jail to be trans- ferred at this time, several others, who have been incarcerated having either served their time or been ot1 erwise released, The three removed were: Nora McMillan, sentenced to serve 30 days in jail, on a charge of being drunk at lnternational Falls; Ed. Bowen, ac- cused of the crime of grand larceny im the second degree, alleged to have been committed at International Falls and’ who’ was held to the grand jury, beimg committed in default. of bail; John Olson committed from Big Falis, being charged with having forcibly entered a, meat market at Big Falls and taking a sum of money estimated to have been about 380. \ The Beltrami county jail has been used as the place of imprisonment for ali Koochiching county prisoners ever since the organization of the county on the northern boundary line. Koochiching county now has one f the very finest court houses and jails in the state, amd the jail has just been completed and made ready for the reception of prisoners. H. W. Forrer is the sheriff of Koochiching county amd Ermest Hol- ler is his chief deputy and jailor. Shot Chinese. Pheasant. George Hinzleman was arrested by Game Warden Harry Monday on a charge of killing a Chinese pheas- am, and was taken before Judge Huson, where hé pleaded guilty and was sentenced to pay a fine of $10 and costs. Mr. Harry secured 1. ezgs from the game ard fish com- mission last spring, which were hat- ched on the John Hepfel farm, and as they are the only ones in this part of the state amd are protected all the year around, Harry is keep- img rather a watchful eye over them Witson McMillan, of Hill City, was also brought before Judge Huson and pleaded guilty of shooting a deer after the closed season. He was fined $25 and costs. Additional Locals. R. G. Comer of the Gem theatre was a business visitor at Virginia Tuesday. There will be a sale of home made «andy on Saturday at Kremer’s store ‘ey the youm'g ladies of the M. E. Sunday school. Mr. qod Mrs. John Walmer of Buarbon, Ind., sister and brother-in- Jaw of Mrs. Harry Price, arrived in GrapA Rapids on Wednesday of last week, They came to attend the fun- ex#e of the late: Harry Price, but iwierment was made the day prior te their arrival. They had been noti- fied.of.the death of.Mr.Price but fail-| ed to advise Mrs. Price that they | would attend the fumeral. Mr. and | Mrs. Walmer are still here visiting | with the bereaved widow, but ex- | pect to retum to their Indiana home | in a day or two, when they will be | accompanied by Mrs. Price who will remain with them for an indefinite period. ve We heard a good one on Judge A. S. Huson yesterday. It seems the Judge. journeyed to Nashwauk, the day following the closing of the Grand Rapids saloons, for the pur- pose of assisting his daughter, Mrs. Varner, in packing her household goods preparitory to removing to this villaage, where, ‘with her hus- pand she will make her home. The judge was disguised in his muskrat cap and consequently when he went, about the village looking for barrels gnd boxes, the impression was naturally created that he was the famous Pussyfoot Johnson, there for the purpose of closing Nash- ‘wauk’s thirst emporiums. Until en- lightened some of the citizens regarded him with no uncertain de- gree of hostility and he wasn’t even able to get a glass of water. Honor Brand Demonstration. A representative of the Honor bramd of foodstuffs will be at H. Hughes & Co.’s store Thursday, Fri- day and Saturday, December 22, 23 and 24 and a luncheon will be serv- ed every visitor at the store on those days. This demonstration is for the purpose of proving the qual- ity of Hqnor brand goods and every- body is imvited to come, inspect the new store and partakee of a well cooked lunch. To LET CONTRACT FOR STRIPPING Four Million Yards of Earth Must Be Moved to Uncover Ore Body Near Hibbing. It is announced that the Interstate Mining company, which is the min- ing division of Jones & Laughlins, one of the largest independent iron and steel concerns, is about to award a contract for stripping the Long- year mine, situated one mile east of Hibbing. It is estimated that the removal of 4,000,000,000 cubic yards of earth will be necessary, aad it is therefore a large piece of work, The work of mine stripping, con- trary to expectation some years ago, hag imereased rather than decreased. Mines thak were opened up as under- ground propositions, and which never were expected to be operated other- wise, have been stripped and others are to be stripped. The reason that it was early expected that compara tively few mines on the Mesaba would be stripped was that it was then supposed that but a modern depth off surface could be stripped to advantage, but heavy overburden is now removed. For example, the stripping at the Susquehanna mine at Hibbing requires the removal of a depth of 80 to 150 feet of earth. Mortgage Foreclosure Sale.
