M. C. Songer went to Hill City Friday where he has considerable carpenter work in sight. Mr. and Mrs. O. E. Skelly, Miss Skelly and J. J. Murphy were Grand Rapids visitors Sunday. W. J. Powers came up from Grand Rapids Tuesday: and made the: trip by boat to Pokegama lake. G. M. ‘Wood was out on the lake a few hours Sunday and returned with a nice bag of fourteen ducks. John Hepfel, of Grand Rapids, was in the village Monday in the in terests of his candidacy for sheriff. Miss Cora Dickey arrived here from Duluth last week for a few days’ visit with relatives and friends. Until further notice the Christian church ‘will hold services at’ Village hall at the regular hours’ each Sun- day. Mr. and Mrs. G. G. Wood left for Cleveland, Ohio, Sunday where they will spend about two weeks on busi- ness. Mr. and Mrs. C. Parker were call- ed to Hill City last week by the dangerous ilness of Mr. Parker’s father. When it rains, it pours, Carter’s latest loss is his housekeeper from the Fultoti-Carter ranch, whereabouts unknown. Mrs, C. M. Erskine came up from Grand Rapids between trains Tues- day to visit at the W. W. Fletcher home.' A dancing club has been organiz- ed with 24 members and it. is pro- posed to give dancing parties every two weeks. W. L. Torrey went to his farm up the river for a few days stay Fri- day and left Fred in charge of the cedar loading. Cohasset people are com- mencing to wonder at the size of Tom Claus’ potato pateh. A reception was given at the Meth- odist church this evening in honor of the new minister, Rev. Stilli. A delightful time is reported. John Nelson -states he has located his plow at the Carter ranch. He is yet undecided as to whether he will institute legal proceedings. The Methodist choir met at. the home of Mrs. J M. Stackhouse: Tues- day evening. The choir is getting along nicely and now numbers 15. Mrs. J. F. Cook ' has received »::a BOOST FOR COHASSET:: consignment of floor show cases ‘which, when set up, will add greatly to the interior appearance of the confectionery store. Mrs. J. C. Gilmore went to Minne- apolis Tuesday afternoon where she will purchase a stock of notions and conduct a notion store at her resi- dence On Second street. Heretofore services have only been held at the Methodist church ‘every other Sunday, but Cohasset will now have a resident minister and services will be held regularly each Sunday morning and evening. iP, H. Hynes, Great Northern tie inspector, returned from Montana on Tuesday after a couple of months work there. The change did not seem ‘to agree with Pat and he de- parted for Minneapolis Friday, on the sick list, R. K. Stokes, electrical engineer at the hardwood factory, has resigned nis position and taken one “as book- keeper for the same company, His former work, owing to the state» of his health, was too arduous, hence the change. Rey. Stilli, the new Methodist min- ister, will make Cohasset his resi- dent, this village now being a sin- gle parish, Floodwood being taken from it. Rev. Stili.has found favor wit the people of Cohasset and in turn the people are well pleased with him. Wm. Wolf and bride arrived here from the west Tuesday afternoon and thought to find everybody un- prepared, but several got wind of their coming and accordingly they were met with showers of rice as they descended from the train. Joe Lambert, the pretty frog, has forsook his job as mixologist at the Carter bar and is now digging potatoes at the ranch, All pleadings on the| part of Mr. Carter are of no avail. He firmly refuses to return to town nd Bays he will lead the simple life as long as the spuds hold out. When Wm. Carter returned home from a town board» meeting one day last week he found Grubhoe Joe in- stalled in his building with all . the deadly implements: of his trade. Not wishing to provoke ‘a row, he fin- ally consented to give him the use of the adjoining -building, formerly. used as a restaurant. The ‘McMahon road, west of town is now completed and John McMahon for whom the road was named can be seen exercising his fine span of blacks on the new stretch each even- ing ‘Wm. Carter of the town board has been accused of being instru- mental in having ‘the road built as a peace offering to Mr. McMahon, who was his opponent’ at the spring election. Dr. EB. W. Johnson went to Bemid-| ji Sunday where he expects to lo- cate permanently, that being a much larger field. Dr. Johnson has a very good record to his credit during his stay in Cohasset. There was but two deaths in the village and in both in- stances they were attended by out of town physicians, which gives him a record of no deaths in one year. No effort has beén made to count the births. Quick witted Wm. Carter, with the aid of Wm. Carter, who never loses an opportun- ity to get something for nothing, pro- posed they take the hens to the ranch, invite a few of the boys and havea “moligan” constructed by that master chef, Grubhoe Joe, The proposition met with general approv- al and for the sake of appearances and to keep the curiosity of the general public from being aroused, it was called a spud digging bee. ‘Accordingly, fourteen -of ‘the boys journeyed to the ranch Sunday morn- ing, dug enough potatoes for the “moligan” and spent the balance of the day imbibing copious draughts of lithia ‘water. Grubhoe Joe in mak- ing the chief piece de resistance, first sized up ‘the crowd and then searched about’ until be found an empty lard can which had originally contained 150 pounds of extract of hog. The.chickens were then brought out, but so many remarks were made concerning their size, one of the boys called them robins, they were fimally turned loose and nine ot Wm. Carter’s fat, juicy pullets took their place.
