GRAND RAPIDS HERALD-REVIEW WEDNESDAY, JULY 12 ,1910. SUGGESTIONS FOR THE FARMER An acre of land in northeastern Minnesota, when cleaned of stumps, will usually go far toward paying for the cleaning with the first year’s crop, according to experiments at the Grand Rapids station, The station recommends cooperative buying of dynamite in the timbered sectiqns of Minnesota so that it may be had at the wholesale price. Duluth and the iron range towns affords one of the best local markets in the west for farm products. The land is won- derfully productive when cleared of its natural incumbrances. Dynamite and knowledge of its use do the cleaning. In raising pigs in northeastern (Minnesota, as practiced at the ex- periment station at Grand Rapids, it is important to remember that some of the most profitable food is clover pasture and skim milk. Ex- pensive grains are fed only to finish the product grown on inexpensive pasture and dairy by-products. Good clover pasture always should be ready for the six weeks old pig. Eight pigs per sow have been raised at the Northeast experiment station at Grand Rapids the past three years. The Yorkshire breed is noted for its large litters and strong constitution. The brood sows are wintered on second crop of clover, boiled roots, skim milk and half a pound each of grain daily. They are comfortably housed with ace to a yard {mn the day time. Exercise is an important element in care. The sows are bred im mber, farrow in March or early , and raise but one litter a year. station keeps the good mothers as they are productive— from four to six years. Qnly brood sows are carried through the winter. Bacon Hogs.—The experiment sta- Grand Rapids is raising mproved Yorkshire, and prac- tices having their sows farrow in March and April. The pigs are tu d into a clover pasture when from six to eight weeks old, and are fed a little shorts and milk. In September barley ad peas are added to their ration, and for two months they are fed all they will eat. They reach prime condition about the first of November and weigh from 130 to 150 pounds. In the local market the price the past three years has avreag- ed eight and a half cents a pound. The cost of production has bean esti- mated by Superintendent McGuire to be four and one-half cents a pounj Good nursing, early farrowing, clover pasture, skim milk, barley, shorts and peas, easily obtained with little expense make a good profit in the pig industry. A The as long tion at A Lucky Runaway. Last Thursday evening about eight o'clock as County Commissioner Neal Mullins was starting for his home from Grand Rapids.to.Laprairie.a bolt holding the buggy thills worked out of place and the cross bar on the shafts struck the horse, which start- ed to run and kick. Coming down Third street the animal dashed into a pile of building material at the Mc- Alpine corner in a man- ner that threatened injury to the occupants of the buggy and ruin to the outfit. Mr. Mullins was thrown out of the rig and sus- tained several scratches and bruises, but fortunately was not seriously in- jured. He was beipg accompanied home by a young girl who remained seated im the buggy while the fright- ened animal was furiously kicking and plunging to extricate itself from the confusion. Tearing lose from the material piled im the street the horse Started again to run and broke away from the iniggy at the corner of Third street and Leland avenue ,and with the thills still dangling at its heels headed into the Pokegama livery barn. The girl remained seated in the buggy when it was left stand- §ng in the street. She was unharm- ed beyond the fright that such an experience would naturally produce. The buggy was badly.broken up Under the circumstances and opportunities for serious injuries to the occu- pants it may be said to have bedn a lucky runaway.
